Premature Oil Change. Should I Change the Filter?

I'm changing my oil at 1600 miles because I have a few short track days on it.

Should I change the oil filter? Not sure if the oil filter is mostly there to filter out external particles, or if it's largerly intended to strain out bits of metal from the oil.

Thanks

You might as well change it if your are changing the oil.

While it is a small filter, it still holds oil. Leaving it would introduce contaminated oil that you are trying to remove because you think it's well used into the fresh oil that you want. Only you can decide what is more important: obsessive purity or pennies in your pocket.

It's $6 or so. Why not just do a full oil change and be done with it rather than worry that you've gone too long on a single filter when it comes time to change your oil.

amazon usually has good prices on wix filters. I usually buy a bunch at a time to get the free shipping.

Oil filters are good for two oil changes normally, so changing at 1600 miles cuz of a couple track days is silly, however you should still take it off and drain the old oil out of it, so it doesn't save you any time.

ScraggleRock waits until the third shower to change his sox? Are we so concerned about time that we can't take the time to do what needs to be done for our cars?

Actually, Gary, I wasn't condoning recycling filters, I was just stating that technically, filters are good for two oil cycles and at 1600 miles, you don't HAVE to change it. But, obviously if its time you're worried about, a new filter is the way to go regardless.

$8? Get Purolator for ~$4. They're almost an inch longer than wix.
