They can go longer if your engine is mechanically sound and you aren't pouring dirt down the fill.

I actually design filters for a living (not for cars) and you'd be surprised how much junk they can hold and still work within spec.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying go longer on your filters. It's $4...change it.
