The transponder is the antenna that relays the digital radio to the cops small radio on his waist or pocket. They will usually have the transponder on if they are outside of their car lasering or radaring people with instant on. cuz they need access to the radio easily.
it also detects these transponders within a 1 - 2 mile radius.
not all states use them.. but the one I do does.

I just reordered a V1 w/ concealed (my dad permanently borrowed my last one.
i also use a concealed BCT7, as well as a BCT10 clipped to console along my right thigh.
BCT7, mounted in the sedan's armrest, detects airplane/helicopter frequencies and is wired through my stereo system, so it is selectable from the steering wheel. It also uses a larger antenna that I have mounted between the roof and headliner at the back of the car. BCT10 is small and compact, no air traffic though. I use the thin wire antenna and have it hidden between the A pillar and windshield. CHP and L.A. Sheriff are not digital yet. Works great.
Cheers, Ted

Escort Passport SR1 Radar/Laser detector. I love this unit as all its sensors mount externally. One goes in the front and protects 360 degrees and the other one is mounted on the rear license plate frame. Works flawlessly and just saved my *** a couple of days ago when it went crazy with the laser warning beep. Well, what do you know... there was a cop ahead in the gas station targeting people heh.
