The car is from a friend. Has check engine light so need to figure out how to pass smog.

Car has oil leak, taking 1 L every 1k miles.

Car also has electrical leak (most likely through the BOSE stereo system).

Friend told me the electricle leak is pretty common with the 2003 g35. THe solution is aftermarket stereo or just take the fuse out during long term storage.

Question is, is the engine on these things pretty good? Can it land to 200k miles without problems?

Should i even bother with this? I just really miss a manual so it would be my beater car!

Our cars can definitely make it past 200k miles. but the one your describing sounds like a PITA for sure. and unless he's giving it to you for a grand. stay away from it

All depends on how mechanically skilled you are. Are you paying labor to figure out the car, or DIY? Go to an auto parts store and have them scan the check engine light, it's free. That will give you a better idea.
Is the oil leaking or burning? Common issue in these cards to burn oil. Do you actually see a leak? If so, where is it from?

Do you have any service or maintenance history?

A lot of factors here to consider, price to buy it being the main one

Is 1l every 1k miles normal for this car?

What could be the culprits?

That's quite a bit of oil consumption. my oil is 1800 miles in and nothing noticeable yet..

Even if the problems with the motor turn out to be acceptable, you don't want the car. The motor is the strong point on these cars; very reliable. The suspension is the weak point. Basically, I'm saying if the motor is to the point where it needs excessive attention, I can only imagine the condition of the suspension. Step away

You need to post the selling price. That is a big factor. $2k? maybe. Anything more, then pass.

Although the issues seem to be a red-flag already. A car that old with that many issues is not worth it.

Under $2k might be ok (that's a big if) depending on the rest of the car's condition.

You'll need to check tranny and clutch as well.

good luck and keep us posted. If I were you, start looking at other G35's in your price range. I've seen plenty under $5k in my area.
