Slap stick shift

I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm curious about this slap stick shift on my 2003 G35 AT5. When I'm going about 80mph in the automatic drive mode. It has me at 4th gear at around 2600 rpms I think. In that ball park. Well when I slap the shifter over to Auto-manual it keeps me in 4th gear but the RPMs jump to like 3200 and I can feel a difference in the engine. From what I've concluded is that the slap stick semi manual is sort of a "performance" option. It certainly improves throttle response but with it being only semi-manual it has its limitations. Anyone else have any input on this or any advice on to even ever bother using it? Thanks.

When your in Auto mode it is in 5th gear but when you move over to manual mode it drops a gear to 4th so that you can accelerate faster. Drive on the freeway and go into 5th gear in manual mode, then move it over to Auto and nothing will happen. Thus proving that it puts you in 5th gear in Auto.
