Gas door will not close

The gas door on my 03 coupe will not close. When I push it in to close, it simply springs back out. I keep trying to push it in at different strengths and angles, but it will not stay closed and springs back out. This happens whether the doors are locked or unlocked.

A couple points to note:
  • The actuator appears to work fine as it extends and retracts when locking and unlocking the doors
  • The gas door appears to properly line up with the body i.e. the gaps between the door and the body appear the same as when the gas door would close
  • The spring works fine and pushes the door out when I try to push it in
  • The hinges appear fine
  • When this happened for the first time, the door opened normally and did not have any issues nor did I have to use any force to open it
Does anyone have any ideas? Everything seems fine but it simply will not hook up with the locking mechanism.

I have seen many threads about people's gas doors not opening and having to lubricate or replace the actuator, but no threads on the door not closing.

The spring release with the rubber cap on it may not be locking when pushing door in. It should click when pushing in and click again when pushing door so that it pops open. This piece just pops in and commonly breaks. You can change it in about 30 seconds if this is the issue.

I had to replace mine simple due to the rubber dry rotting and cracking, but I think this is the part you should replace to fix your issue. Literally takes a minute to replace it.

How much was that? I need this due to my rubber boot corroding.

How do you remove the original one? Just pull?

Just search the part number on ebay, plenty of dealership stores have it. Price is right around $30 depending on vendor.

I ripped the rubber off, since mine was already damaged. Then used a small flat head to pop loose 2 locking tabs, pretty easy to spot when you're looking at it. New one just slides right in and clicks in place.

Yeah.... I saw them on Ebay from dealers for around $25 shipped prior to asking you but wasn't sure if you knew of someplace cheaper.

Excellent! Thanks a bunch!

Wow, such great feedback! Thank you everyone.

I tested my spring and it is not clicking so I assume it is the culprit. My local dealer quoted me $11 CAN for the part. Hopefully this is it! I will report back once I have installed the new part.

$11 CAN? Wow.. that's absurdly cheap. That's like $8.25 USD. My local dealer wanted 39.75 for it, so i bought mine on Ebay for $25 shipped. What a rape job.

Popped it in today... piece of cake. Coated the rubber boot of the new one with a very thin layer of some dielectric grease to hopefully prevent the new one from breaking down rapidly. My old one has been torn for like 3 years but I just had a sandwich bag over it to prevent water intrusion into the trunk... LOL.

Turns out the dealership quoted me the wrong part. It is actually $49 CAN + tax. Looking for online options now.

Good price but will not ship to Canada. Have you anything about Auto Part Master? http://autopartmaster.com/en/?action...price_margin=1

No replacement part needed - easy fix

After removing the spring assembly, I found a metal clip/latch on the bottom that was unlatched. After latching it back into place, the spring assembly worked perfectly. Apparently this latch holds the spring in its closed position and releases it into its open position. So if this problem happens to you, be sure to check this latch before buying a replacement part.

PS: I am not mechanically inclined and this was super easy and took all of 3 minutes. All you need is two small/thin flat heads to release the spring assembly.
