Exhaust Problem?

so my car is a 2005 G35 6mt Rev-up. Today as I was driving to my barracks the car suddenly wouldn't go above 2500 RPM. If it did it felt like it was stalling and made a horrible backfire noise. Also, at stoplights the RPM would drop and the car would shudder then they'd pop back up. After I talked to the guys at AutoZone, who thought it was a catalytic converter, I started it and it had no issue what so ever.
Has anyone ever had a problem and are there any solutions?

Thanks in advance,
George
