Scrapping Noise When Braking

Hey guys so I noticed lately since it has gotten worse as I am driving I am getting a scrapping sound from my right rear wheel. I took the wheel off to see if something was scrapping the rotor and the rotor seemed fine. I haven't taken off the caliper yet because I have the brembos and have not tried yet but what seems to be happening is there is a fixed point when something is rubbing. When I drive in first gear when the wheel is at a center point there is a light scrape sound so every few feet it'll make a noise then disappear once I am moving too fast. But when braking and getting down to about 20 mph and less the sounds is a lot louder inside. Im not very knowledgable about this so ANY info will help. Thank you very much in advance.

I assume you know enough about how brakes work to know whether or not it's just that your pads are worn out and either the wear indicators are squealing or the brakes are grinding when you press them?

It could also be a dust shield scraping the rotor. That happens a lot on cars in the rust belt when the shields rust up and deform.

Does it only do it when you are actually hitting the brakes?

I had this same problem about a month ago, had no clue what it was.

I washed my car because I thought it was brake dust too but it was still there.

Went and got new pads and replaced them and the noise was gone.

I know how brakes work and other basics. Theres no rust on the car at all and I also sprayed everything down with brake cleaner when I took off the wheel. Also it isn't the brake pads because I checked the pads which still have a lot of meat on them. The noise is there without braking when I am going slow enough, such as just throwing it into first and creeping along. But the noise amplifies a a lot more when braking. It kind of hard to describe the noise when not braking so heres the best way I think to describe it. If I'm moving in first gear the noise is not continuous, if you imagine when one part of the wheel is making contact with the street, it won't make the little noise until that one part of the wheel makes contact again so its at a certain point of rotation of the wheel that seems to grind or scrape something. BUT when I brake it is continuous. Thanks guys

Do your pads have shims on them? And if so, is the surface between the pad and shim lined with a brake-quiet agent?

Ya they have shims and are lined with an agent. Its not really a brake screech from a shim or low amount of pad.

Time to find an independent brake/alignment shop in your neighborhood before your wheel falls off...and you're wondering why! If you can't find out/fix issues like you're having take it to someone that will find it for you! Avoid the dealerships whenever possible!

Try bending the dust shields back. That's the only thing you haven't tried. If still making noise, take it to a shop.

Could be a wheel bearing, but that shouldn't do it only when braking.

Sometimes a small amount of rust will form on the rotors causing a whooshing/light scraping sound when I let my car sit for some days. After the film is gone though it's good. Check bearings and shield as recommended.

Did you take my advice, did you find out what was causing the rubbing noise? Having answers to your questions when you find the culprit is how members learn so you need to share your experience! It's been 5 months since you asked our input, what did you find...bearings, pads or rotors?

Interested, what or how is one of the calipers damage?
