I too am facing the same dilemma...I can't decide between stick or auto. If my commute to work wasn't filled with an hour and a half of stop and go traffic, I would pick the 6MT in a heartbeat, even though I've never driven a stick before. I plan on buying the car in about 2 months, and I can't make up my mind.

For everyone saying that a manual shift **** gets in the way, it's shorter than the big tall auto shifter by a few inches. In this case, smaller is better

BTW, where is the hand brake on an auto G? Is it a foot pedal?

These "auto vs manual" threads always crack me up. I love reading about the guys who say "man, MT or u r a wuss". It's funny. I think you should go with what you like. If you do lots of stop-and-go traffic, then get an auto or get ready for a large left calf muscle. :P If you own another car that you can use for daily driving, get an MT for those nice days and weekends. If you don't know how to drive MT, don't worry about that, it won't take too long to learn.

Also, if you go auto, the .5 second difference in 0-60 times is something you'll never even notice unless you plan to race. If you're a car enthusiast and plan on modding or racing, then the MT might be better. If you're a bit more casual, then maybe auto is better. A forum like this one will have more 6MT people because people that own MTs are more likely to be car enthusiats. One more thing, if you're a young guy and get influenced by the "MT peer pressure crowd" then I guess that might play a big part in your decision too.

For me, I try to keep in perspective that this is a luxury sports coupe and not a *****-out sports car. The G is nice touring coupe and the auto (with the manumatic when you feel spunky) complements it very well. On the other had, if I DID have another car for daily driving, I woud have went with an MT for sure. But then again, I probably would have gotten a Z06 instead if I had that kind of cash.

i had the same option as you... enjoyable mos def get the mt... just for casual get an AT... after thinking about which one i should get i ended up getting a AT... my dream was to get an MT but the fact that it is a strong car either way... i went with the AT..
No regrets so far... just thinking once in a while when i'm in the car... if i had to do everything with a clutch and a stick.. this would of been much more complicated...
go with your own decision.. either way its a dope *** car... but... alwayz keep in mind.. if your gonna get a navi... i think it would be really hard to use the navi while your driving the stick... cuase it's even hard doing it while i'm driving an auto~
as i said... either choice... you have a G35...

It's simple:

Automatic - For City, busy stop and go traffic. Always have your hands full.

Manual - For long distances and trips. Racer, car lover and/or a gearhead. Not recommended for newbies, hilly landscape or high traffic cities.

Or

Auto: Not such a good driver, has never driven a stick, not going to be auto-xing or taking to track, or needs to constantly talk on the cell phone

Stick: Enjoys driving, going to be auto-xing or taking to track, likes to shift in traffic

Or just go for what ever the hell you feel like

That's just immature reasoning in my opinion. Who says that you get an auto if you are not a good driver, or never driven a stick or constantly talking on the cell phone, or do not enjoy driving. I got an auto in this car because is was a good balance of both worlds. There is nothing wrong with either car. Most of the above posts show that people know very little about the performance of the auto in the G.
Just go with what you like be it 6MT or 5AT. The difference in performance is marginal* (in the 05 may be more noticeable- but no one knows) and will only be evident if driven with professional driver skills. A 6MT- to me is more fun if you know how to drive one well, but only because of the clutch action.

player...

if your serious about the manual but hesitate due to a lack of driving experience just pick-up some lessons with a professional driving school. i assume u already have a lisence and know how to drive, so it'll make it that much easier. u'll be up and driving really well by the time u pick-up the car. plus... if u live in a small town, u don't have to worry about many retards bothering u as u get to know your new vehicle. don't have a friend teach u... unless he really knows how to drive stick properly. i cannot tell u how many times i've been in manual cars with friends driving.... as they rip through gears feeling they are mario andretti when they are NOT! my uncle tried to teach me once... and it was a disaster. lead to more frustration then anything. have a professional teach u... and u will never regret it. just look at the extra cost as part of the car (which shouldn't be much for 4 or 5 lessons). i highly recommend it... u'll know how to drive the car well with confidence and save on the clutch in the long-run. hope this helps.

-regards.

Driving the MT is a blast, I commute 60 minutes a day in heavy traffic, mostly stop and go the entire trip - but still opted for the MT.

I do wish Inifinti would have incorporated Bluetooth technology into the car, getting a cell phone call when driving to work is a pain.

lol my friend taught me. i had 2 different friends teach me 2 separate times and my third time at the dealer. it's fun and all and not that hard pick up. to be perfect, now thats hard. i still have a little trouble starting up, but even someone that is good at driving manual and buys a new car, will take them a little while to get used to the car. my salesman also said i should take some professional lessons as well. it's a good idea, but you don't have to. i figured i save my money on something else. as long as you have someone to show you what to do, it won't be a problem learning on a new car.

This is one of the more rediculous statements I've ever read. First off, the Navi is VOICE GUIDED (gives you the exact distances and even says "right turn" etc exactly when you need to) and unless you're deaf, I don't see this being an issue at all so don't let Navi discourage anyone from getting manual. I've only owned manual cars and it becomes second nature after literally 2 weeks, you don't need to think or stare at the tach to shift.

If you honestly stare at the Navi while you're driving please turn in your license.

As for anyone complaining about cell phones being harder to use in a stick - most cellphones have speakerphone now and if it does not then get an earpeace. They're $20 or $30 and they're great, I use mine everyday. Do they look rediculous? Sure, but since when is driving a fashion show? Are you ever going to see 99% of the people you pass on the road again anyway? Your primary job when behind the wheel of a car is DRIVING. This is why many European cars (Saab, BMW, etc.) didn't even come with cupholders until the mid 1990's.

PS - in regards to road-head. I have owned 5 manual cars and received "oral treats" in all of them including the G. The handbrake is down when you're driving and the MT stick is shorter than the AT knobbie.

Simple for ya,

Auto > Man

Tiptronic is honest to god a great thing. Auto (if you really wanted it) but shifting with no clutch owns me in the fizzace...
