If the RPMs are dropping all the way to 1K that means your shifting pretty slow and you need to give it a little gas before engaging the clutch. You want the engine RPMs to already be at the same spot that they would be prior to letting the clutch out as they would be at when in gear with the clutch out. Usually for most people the RPMs won't drop enough going into the next gear so you need to wait an extra second for them to match up for a perfectly smooth shift. The thing is, you get more jerkyness from too much RPM than from too little in most cases unless you're shifting at like 6K RPM.

You just have to get out there and practice. The one big thing, as Gary mentioned earlier, is don't ever ride the clutch. You should only have your foot on the clutch when you are in the process of switching gears. It's not a substitute for neutral. The less time you have that clutch down, the better.

eb seems like you have answered your own question. I feel like you're overthinking this issue, we can share our experiences with you but you just need to try the different suggestions you have received here and find what works for YOU. Since you've found a method that "seems to be what's working" keep doing it that way until you feel comfortable you've got it.

The reason your rpm's drop between shifts is because you disengage the transmission from the motor with the clutch in and when you let it out the the motor and the tranny re-engage at the rpms the motor's still running.
