How to fix doors not staying open (replace check links)

Ever since I got my g35, the doors do not stay open when I get out of the car and shut by themselves. After initially researching the problem I came to the conclusion, and many others have also, that it's the way the doors were designed from the factory and nothing can be done about it. I wasn't satisfied with what I had found out, that Infiniti would really let a car be mass produced like this. Anytime I had someone ride with me, they always complained about the door, with one person it actually bruised their shins lol. So I started to look into the problem again, and after finding out that 350's have the same door check and when it was replaced it fixed the problem, I figured why not try it out, the part is pretty cheap anyways. And it worked! The door stayed open at 3 different positions. Here's how you can replace them:

Tools Needed: Small flathead screwdriver, phillips screwdriver, 10mm ratchet, part number 80430CD000 (about $40 on ebay) you will need one for each door

Steps: 1. If you know how to do this skip this step. If not, pry underneath the door handle trim with the small flathead to unclip it as with the small plastic cover inside the door handle. Use the phillips or flathead to remove the 3 10mm bolts now exposed. Use your hands/screwdriver to remove the door panel. Then unclip the courtesy light, window controls and door lock/opener cables.

2. Remove your door speaker. Mine is aftermarket so I just have a few screws securing it but yours may be different. Set it aside so its not in the way of the speaker cutout.

3. Unbolt the two 10mm bolts securing the door check to the door than the one 10 mm bolt securing it to the body. You will need to reuse the bolts, the two in the door are the same size.

4. Wiggle the door check out through the speaker cutout.

5. Insert the new door check into position. The part works with both doors, depending on how it is orientated. When you go to bolt it up, first have the two door bolts loosely holding it so you can get the body bolt to line up. Tighten the body bolt down first and than tighten the door bolts down.

6. Put the speaker back in, reconnect the lights, lock, and opener, and put back the door panel and your all done!

Your door will now stay open on its own! It seems that the piece just wears down over time and can't stay in each of the 3 grooves to keep the door open. Just try to be gentle with it to avoid wearing it down.

Not as much as the coupe. Our doors are significantly lighter and aren't as prone to chopping off your leg as the coupe doors are.

The coupe doors are huge, thanks for the write up. Please immortalize the photos by using the forum's built in attachment tool though!

Thanks for the write up! I replaced mine a few years ago after my daughter got squished in the door (am I a bad parent for laughing at her?) and it made a big difference. The sedan and 350Z all use the same part. It's just the G coupe door is huge and causes that part to wear out much faster than the smaller sedan and 350Z doors.

Thanks for the write up. Changed mine today, first door took about 20 minutes or so trying to unhook the window control harness was the sticker. Finally figured out the plug doesn't come out the whole piece comes apart. 2nd door was under 10 minutes.

Well worth it, nice not having to worry about the threat of getting slammed in the door.

That damn door has spilled my coffee, hit the back of my legs (more than once) and once crushed my son.....You make me smile.
