G35 MPG's

This past weekend went to visit some friends from North NJ to DC (right outside) and decided to test the range of my 03 6spd coupe with 132k. I wound up going there and back on one tank of gas . I didn't hit any particularly awful traffic and avg highway speed was around 80mph. Total trip was 470 miles, when i went to gas station to fill up, i still had 2.5 gal in the tank , giving the car a potential 540 mile range @ ~27mpg. I don't recommend anyone running it dry but i was so damn impressed by the mileage i had to post. Also, another reason for the post is that few months back i was concerned about falling mpg's, here's some things i've done since that i think helped"

cleaned TB, intake plenum, and MAF
new intake plenum gaskets
new air filter
new plugs
5w30 Castrol syntec every 3k
properly inflated tires
New PCV
New diff and trans fluid
Used BG FI cleaner 2k miles ago
drinks only 91 and up gas (usually shell)
only mod is z-tube

hope it helps someone looking to get back some lost mpg's, let me know what kind of mileage you guys get. what mods helped or made it worse

Big6 - I bought a G35 M6 about October last year. Up in the DC/VA area and drove it back to GA. Since it was a long boring trip, I tried to make it interesting (for me) and see what kind of mpg the G35 would get, knowing it wasn't a big mpg vehicle. I don't like to waste my money on speeding tickets so I just cruise along at 5 mph over the speed limit, and never let off, no matter how many LEO's are running radar. They never pull you over for 5 over. And, 5 over is faster than many, it's about average. So, it's not so boring, because I don't even think about the Po-Po. I just enjoy the view, enjoy the tunes and the sound of the car.

Anywho - I filled it up in VA when leaving, and reset the trip meter. Got caught in horrendous rains for about the first 1.5 hours. And otherwise kept it cruising at 75 mph. I made it past Charlotte, NC and it was about 1/4 tank. So I dialed in where I wanted to stop for gas ahead. Once I set that in my navigation, I came around a corner and there was road work. It was about 2 am. Dust from construction was blowing over the interstate, so I canceled the cruise and let it coast down. When I cleared the dust well enough to see again, I touched the throttle and nothing. Hit the clutch to shift to 5th, and the engine died. Eased the clutch out and it turned over, but then I realized it was just coasting. I pulled off into the construction zone thinking I just bought a dud.

Luckily the construction crew was friendly. They kept asking me, "are you out of gas?" I said no, it had 1/4 tank in it. But then I realized that the 499.7 miles on the trip meter was a fairly high number for this car, so ... maybe the fuel gauge was wrong. Guess when I learned about the fuel gauge problems with this car! So I told them, it could be out of gas I guess. They put about a half gallon in it and it fired right up. I went down to the next gas station.

Long story short - I got 499.7 miles on that tank, from full to empty. After doing the math, I got about 25.5 mpg. Not too shabby.

Before I could get the fuel gauge repaired, my son (who I bought the car for), ran it out of gas EVEN AFTER I told him to top it off. But, I recently fixed the fuel gauge and tested it out. It works very linearly right down to the bottom line and now the Low Fuel light will come on as it should. I really enjoy the car, I feel like stealing it from my son and driving it myself. But he loves it too.

The obvious answer is to buy another one so you each have a G.

I've been making round trips from NJ to Florida a couple of times a year for the past fourteen years first with my 06 G35 6speed manual and now with my current 2012 G37S
Your MPG is typical for long over the road long distance driving.

G35 MPG's-peoquue.jpg

I reset the vehicle computer after every fill-up

The only difference between you and I is I only use regular 87 octane , no special expensive oil, never use any fuel additives, new air filters every 10-12k miles, and no mods.
Tires are properly inflated and I do not use cruise control.
Last May returning back to NJ a fill-up was at a Loves Travel Stop in Dillon, SC to another Loves in Va. a distance of 296 miles and filled up with 10.441 gallons of regular 87 and I obtained a 28.35 MPG
Last November same stops resulted in a 25.53 MPG
The major difference was lower outside temperatures = lower MPG

I am seriously considering selling my 2010 Lexus LS 460L for an older 6M G35. However, the 460 is 385 hp, rear wheel drive, only 40k miles, a very nice looking vehicle, rides like a dream, more reliable than a G35, and same or better fuel mileage. So, maybe not a wise move.

Under the same cruise conditions with my 460, it would have yielded upper 20's for mpg. Around town, about the same as the G ... mid to upper teens. Still love the G. It is more my style. 2 Doors, RWD, and manual transmission. If the LS were a manual transmission I would have it until it died. I have 2 more sons to buy vehicles for, 2.5 years spread each, from my oldest. The youngest wants a G35 also. By then (5 years from now) there may not be any decent G35s left, so it may be a G37. Or an FRS / 86. I don't want to buy my sons a high dollar vehicle for them to destroy. My oldest practiced for a year and a half on an old auto Camry. It's his senior year, and he'll be going away this fall. And I wanted to keep the Camry for training purposes for the next son. And get the oldest something decent for his senior year. FRS's are too expensive right now, so I got him a $7,500 G35. Nice car for $7,500.

Telcoman - I respect your info. In the G35, I need to go do some research. But I plan to use plain ole Castrol GTX 5W-30, and a Purolator oil filter. I've never used any additive in any of my vehicles. New filters as recommended ... however, I use the cruise. Set it and forget it. And never even think about getting a ticket. Keep my tires inflated too. On my long drive in the G35, I fueled with 93 octane. Not for performance. But because I think the fuel cap mentioned high octane. For a long cruise on the interstate, I don't believe it would hurt anything to run 87 octane. But at that time I hadn't done enough research to know the G35 that well. So I just followed the fuel cap. I will research more, but my guess is, the knock sensor will detect lower octane fuel usage and retard the timing to compensate. And maybe 20 hp or so peak hp could be lost due to the timing change. Personally, I run high octane fuel when called for because I never know when I may want to use every available bit of power. And the premium is like $5 or $6 per (nearly empty) tank. Not a big deal.

Scion FR-S, Toyota 86, Subaru BRX...

I haven't been so utterly disgusted with a vehicle in a long time, so much hype, so much anticipation, such a complete LETDOWN. Two friends bought them brand new, both got rid of them in the first year and took the loss, underpowered gutless trash, the pinnacle of uncomfortable cockpits, and generally behaved like garbage during spirited driving.

Thank the lord I was able to get some serious wheel time in them because I almost bought one too...

nice! glad you got that problem figured out, my fuel gauge is silly too. After filling up completely, it would drop to 3/4 tank within like 60-70 miles, then drops to half after 100 miles, somewhere between 1/2 and 1/4 tank the needle really doesnt move much for the next 200 miles until the light comes on. The light comes on with like 6-7 gallons still in the tank. i just got used to it

wow thats damn impressive on a 330hp sedan. I have friends with a 335 and another one with a c350 sport that barely scrape 24mpg of normal driving. i tried regular in my G and it feels sluggish and the motor is shakier at idle.

You might be due for a tune up though, when were the plugs replaced? How often do you run injector cleaner? How dirty is your air filter? Etc?

thats funny, my DD is a lexus too! I have an 04 RX330 for crappy weather/hauling/trips. that thing is a pig on gas if i crack 23mpg highway im happy. usually i Avg 19-20, only issue with the RX is that it has a measly 16 gal tank for an SUV. giving it a range of about 300 miles sometimes less its annoying to keep stopping for gas

Plugs and Air filter replaced 4k miles ago
cleaned the MAF, TB and intake plenum and new gaskets all around
Injector cleaner goes in every other oil change

i still get a little bit of shaky idle, and i haven't figured out why, maybe O2 sensors going? otherwise the car runs amazing

Did you do all the recalibration/resets after you did the cleaning?

http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/g35...procedure.html

Might need to do the idle air volume reset again, sometimes it's wonky and I had to do mine a few times. Just make sure the engine is up to operating temp when you do it or it will DEFINITELY be shaky and wierd.

yes i have. When i took off the TB and plenum i forgot to disconnect the battery so when i assembled the car it threw a code so I had to do the key and pedal dance calibration
