White smoke coming from underneath car

Hello,

I have a 2003 g35 coupe with 90k. I changed my oil a couple of days ago using mobil 1 fully synthetic. When I drove to Fresno today, I saw smoke and when I checked my dipstick, it was bone dry. I added in 3 quarts and I saw that my engine stopped smoking, but now I have the smoke from underneath my car. Please help.

Take your car to a competent mechanic and have it checked out immediately. If it were me I'd have it towed, don't drive the car again until you identify the problem. You might have caused irreparable damage to the car if you ran it with little to no oil in it. When was the last time you checked your dipstick before you added 3 qts.? Have you seen any signs of leaking oil under the car? Check your coolant level as well, the white smoke could be anti-freeze leaking from the cooling system.

I would check the oil filter before heading to a mechanic though, a common mistake is double gaskets. Sometimes the old gasket sticks and doesn't come off with the filter and when you add a second gasket with the new filter it fails at higher rpms and blows oil everywhere. Could be spraying oil onto the exhaust.

Thank you good sirs. I will take it in to my mechanic on Monday since there is no one open on Sunday in CA. I'll definitely keep you posted. I hope my car is ok. 😑

I second what cleric said about the double gasket. You may have had the gasket from the original oil filter come off and stick to the surface of where the oil filter seals with the motor, and now have two there since the new filter has its own. This happens occasionally and you need to cautious during oil changes to make sure the old gasket is not stuck on the car. I like to take a paper towel and clean that surface off anyways at each change and make sure there are no scuffs or abnormalities on it that could lead to leaks.
