Massive Noise In Engine After Body Shop
Massive Noise In Engine After Body Shop
The situation: 2005 with 144k. No major issues until now
--Another car hit the driver's side front quarter panel.
--Body shop replaced it, aligned front end.
--Drove the car home and heard this noise and body shop is not responsible and they have no idea what the noise is. Also, the shop claims he took it across the street to the infiniti dealer and they were unable to diagnose, which I find absurd.
Please help.

Talk to the infiniti dealership across the street and see if they confirm that they saw the vehicle. NEVER take ownership of a vehicle from a bodyshop that is not completely fixed, chances are it's just something rattling against something else but since you drove off with the paperwork signed they are no longer obligated to fix any issues that remain on the vehicle.
Did it make the sound initially when you got it or was it something that developed on the ride home?
Sometimes problems like that are found by observing the noisy area while a second person shuts the engine off (or starts the engine) so you can observe what actually happens as the motor settles down.
Have you checked your oil? It doesn't completely SOUND like an actual engine noise but rather metal vibrating and I would start by inspecting for broken exhaust components.

Thanks a million Cleric and Fresh!

I called the infiniti SA but no return call. I will call him monday AM. The car is still at the body shop, but they have requested a few times I need to pick it up.

On the 15 minute ride home from the body shop it was fine. The next day 30 min into the drive to work the noise occurred.
I will check the oil when I get the car.
Thanks again!

Was your car fully warmed up at the point of this video and idling at below 1000 RPM? That sounds a bit too quick and high pitched to be anything internal at notmal idle RPM.
It sounds like something is rubbing against a pulley or possibly a belt. It's also possible that an idler pulley bearing is shot and about to completely seize up. Check your pulley bearings for play with the motor off. A 2005 G35 has 2 idler pulleys... one on each belt. Could also be your power steering pump or alternator. Maybe something fell into the alternator cooling grate when they were working on the car and is being ground against the internal wire wrappings.
A mechanics stethoscope should easily help diagnose this. Even just pressing a screwdriver against things could do it since it's so loud.

turns out it was $hitty work performed by the body shop recommended BY Infiniti or the collision itself. The fan housing had to be removed fan assembly and they saw bent/broken items.
All fixed now though.
Thanks guys for the help!!!

Thanks again guys for all the help.
I am trying to find a diagram showing where the AC hose bracket and fastening hardware are in relation to the left driver's side quarterpanel and bumper which the body shop replaced/worked on. Is it possible they may have done something when working on fender/bumper to harm the hose bracket and fastening hardware?

You can look up so.e of the folks' engine swap threads for good pictures of where all that stuff is without the front end on the vehicle.
Also, make sure you get your alignment corrected, sounds like you got in a decent wreck and I'm sure it's off.
