Ok, so what's faster? stock 350Z base or 6MT?

Hello all,

Does anyone know the answer to this question? I know it might bring on a huge debate, and has probably been posted before, but the searches I did didn't give me enough concrete information. The reason I ask is because friend of mine just bought a base 2005 350Z and I am waiting for my 6MtT to come in, so we were hoping the oracle of knowledge that is this forum could settle this for us!?

what do you mean by "faster". race track, 1/4 mile, 0-60....almost all those things dont matter compared to driver skill. If you guys race....[hopefully on the track, not on the street like retards], and he beats you...go to a racing school at your local track etc. and you will be surprised at what you can do in a car that is less prepared than a crappy driver in a very well prepared car...consider it...i did, and i am surprised at the things i catch up to on the track...[by the way, i dont have a G yet, so i can't really give you anything more than this]

A G35 coupe well compared to a 350Z and with equal drivers the 350z will always be a bit quicker, just the way it is

Base 350Z, its lighter and has more torque on the launch. But it doesnt have an LSD so you might have a chance. Also driver skill is the biggest thing.

LSD really doesn't help you that much, if at all on a launch.......its there more for cornering.

Well im not so sure which Z is faster, however my buddy just bought an 05 pearl white 350Z (base model, 6 speed) and I have an 04 G35 6 speed, and we raced lastnight and were DEAD EVEN through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and mid 4th!

His car isn't broken in yet (only 250 or so miles) and I have like 3K on my G so this might have had something to do with it, but who knows...

Now I know the Z "should" be faster, but this wasn't the case tonight...

Damn....you and your boy raced your cars with that few miles on each on your cars.....that is why I would not buy a used G or 350.....that's the worst thing you guys should do to your cars....IMO break them in at least 5K miles or more before racing them...

I'm not sure I buy this bread in period stuff.

I think that was true in older cars. I pushed my car to the limit when new before even reading a post about not going too high on the RPM's during break in. Then I was like Oh No! I talked to a couple of people and they say the same thing. Break in used to be a big deal on older cars, but not anymore. I called Nissan and they said the same thing.

When I bought my Jetta new they told me at the dealership to run it hard.

I don't buy it. Somebody show me some concrete evidence and I may change my tune!

as others said, stock 350z has a weight advantage, however, you'll have an advantage if you're friend doesn't know to turn off VDC :P

He has the base Z which dosn't come with the traction control

The dealership told me I had to put 1500 miles on the car before I could take it above 4,000 rpm's, after that I could do whatever...

When you build a motor (I use to build Honda motors, b16's, b18's, with new pistons and rods) You only have to break that motor in for about 1500 miles also...and thats a brand new motor...so I believe that makes sence...

However when I bought my s2000 in 02' It came with 8K...and when I would rev that motor past 8 grand the motor would kinda scream at me to stop(it just didn't sound pretty, it sounded like it wanted to blow up)..however after I put like 5K more of "my kind of miles" on the car, around 9 grand the car felt/and sounded much smoother and more harmonic then crazyness, and also ran better...so I would like to see some hard facts about this 8k break-in point.

by 1500 miles... what is there to break in? the piston rings will have surely seated by then

Trust me there is a difference between an engine with few hundred miles and one with few thousand miles on it... When my 350z was new you could feel how tight it was when you accelerated fast.... Was a big difference after about 1500 miles was put on the engine..

weight weight weight, what its all about there. a full tank in the Z would put him next to you if you were on E.... zs got same power with 150 lbs less.... should be a bit quiker on the top end of things, by mid 4th he woulda strarted walking you if he was gonna, prob woulda stayed even.. all depends on the driver for the most part....
