That black button is the spring that holds it shut and open. The hole cut out is the lock that keeps it shut while you have the doors locked.
Try pressing the black button to actuate it. If it won't actuate then remove it inside the passenger side trunk behind the liner and try and fix it or replace the part.

yeah I realized the black part is the spring, it pops it open but theres nothing to keep the gas tank closed. I went behind inside the trunk and played with the locking mechanism. I pushed it in and pulled it out while looking and it does nothing
I'll send a video link later when I get home and have time. But see if the unlock (twice) or the lock button moves the gas lock actuator. It's job is NOT to hold the door closed all the time though, perhaps your gas hinge just needs some lube action.

yeah that and my pillar piece wasnt in good condition got them at junk yard for 30 bucks total compared to
140 for pillar and 30 for fuel door on eBay unpainted
it is a project car and will be painted or wrap eventually after Im done building it from inside out
