Driver seat getting torn up

I know this is a common issue, but I couldn't find anything when searching just now on this forum. Anyone taken a stab at fixing it themselves somehow? I got quotes of 1-2k to have the seat done, that's ridiculous... Literally thinking of removing the seat cover myself and buying some leather and replacing some parts or something... ?

Man, so no one has figured out a DIY? Really?

Wish I'd found this when I bought the G, it started ripping right after I bought it.

Probably because most people cant do upholstery work themselves.

I did get lucky after lots of hard work searching for a used replacement on my passenger seat bottom, which had a tear through the fragile perforated leather. I found a decent one in the classified forums for sale on here. It can take some work and a few months of searching to find one. Good ones would show up at my local Pull a Part but the seats would be stuck in a position without power where they were almost impossible to remove.

As far as upholstery shops go, they can be quite rare and good ones who charge a fair price even more rare. When I need a seat bolster fixed recently on my former 2003 MR2 Spyder, the local upholstery shop in the wealthy suburbs wanted $500 and had a 3 month backlog. Even when I had the seat removed and ready to drop off. I then went to a shop outside of town, near my home that does a lot of automotive and boat upholstery work and been in business for 40 years. I dropped my seat off the same day, he looked at it and thought he could fix it with some very similar black leather and cushion material he had in stock, and quoted my $150. It was finished 3 days later and he gave me a $10 discount for paying cash.

Advice: remove the seat yourself, haul it with you for quotes, go to multiple shops, don't be picky on the exact OEM match leather, have the cushion repaired, also check boat and RV upholstery shops. OR put a lot of legwork into searching the classifieds here or eBay.

Exactly. Upholstery work takes skill and a very heavy duty sewing machine.
