Some FAQs (frequently asked q's) for new owners...

I joined the forum a couple of months ago (knowing nothing at all about cars). After spending many hour researching (and buying an ’04 coupe a month ago), I thought newer owners could use something like this – just a few FAQs answered. And really learned a lot from this forum (some useful, some useless but entertaining info)

The answers were ones I got from this forum, or others, so feel free to correct any of this or to add.

1. 1st oil change – Some recommend changing at 1k (if for nothing else, peace of mind, but will help your car last longer when it hits the 150k+ mile mark. The owner’s manual recommends changing it at 3,750 if you drive daily. (Cost - $40-$60 if you bring it in, depends on area. I myself went to an Infiniti dealer and it cost $36)

2. Synthetic oil? Change to synthetic after break-in (maybe 10k or 20k depending on who you ask). Some have used synthetic since day 1. Mobil 1 (or Royal Purple) seems the preferred brands.

3. Tint – brands recommended – Huper Optik (could cost between $250-$400 but may be difficult to find a dealer), Llumar, Solar Guard?

4. Tint – dot matrix – better to glue over this part or use a vinyl strip (but either way, it is possible to tint over if you find the right person to do it)

5. Car wash/detailing – Zaino seems to be the most recommended. (Others – Lexol for leather conditioning, Meguiar's NXT Generation wax, California blade)

6. Oil grade – the manual says 91 octane. Anything lower may be used temporarily but may be bad for your engine in the long run. 93 could burn quickly resulting in lower mpg.

7. MPG – Low for the car… but seems to average 15-low 20s for most (depending on driving habits, city vs. highway, etc.)

8. Cold start – Recommended to warm up for about 30 sec – 1 min. Then drive conservatively until engine warms up.

9. For taller people – Depends on the individual, but the seat can be made to go one inch lower than it first comes in…. A couple of the other threads tell you how.

10. Color – the only comment I have is, black is extremely hard to keep clean (I can attest to that)…but all the same, I love it.

Just a couple of basic things… I know I missed tons of stuff... but I could’ve used something like this when I first joined (but dutifully went and searched through the forum). =P

Hope this helps.

Good info. When I saw the title I thought it said "F A G s". <---Whoa apparently if you type the word out normally it's censored.

- all preference.. on your own break in method.. i changed mine at 500

5. Car wash/detailing – Zaino seems to be the most recommended. (Others – Lexol for leather conditioning, Meguiar's NXT Generation wax, California blade)
- Depends on person taste and color of car, how often the wax etc.. post in the detailing area if you have any more questions.

6. Oil grade – the manual says 91 octane. Anything lower may be used temporarily but may be bad for your engine in the long run. 93 could burn quickly resulting in lower mpg.
- if u use anything below 91 your an idiot... anything too high will make you a rich idiot.. i think anyone that doesnt know why their cars should use 91 or higher octane should go google up how engine combustion works

7. MPG – Low for the car… but seems to average 15-low 20s for most (depending on driving habits, city vs. highway, etc.)
- bleh

8. Cold start – Recommended to warm up for about 30 sec – 1 min. Then drive conservatively until engine warms up.
- wait until your RPM sets down to idle (500RPM) and watch temp guage

10. Color – the only comment I have is, black is extremely hard to keep clean (I can attest to that)…but all the same, I love it.
- black also goes faster at night xP

oh oops... didn't notice the heading... tried to change it, but apparently i can't. And I personally use 91, but the traffic and rising gas prices makes me wish 89 would do...

ya i agree, good information, this thread should be stickied and all should try to contribute to the FAQ's in the general forum. OK so my .02 cents, for aftermarket parts for the G try one of the following websites:

www.everythingg35.com
www.gruppe-s.com
www.i-m-racing.com
www.grubbsperformance.com
www.performancenissanparts.com

A few more things

1. You can mod your car as much as you want (check specific FI first) as long as the dealership can't prove or logicly deduce that the mod made something go horribly wrong, you still have you 30k/36month
2. Color- If your lazy or going to do exteam mods to your car, get Ivory Pearl- If you want a slick look and aren't going to cry about cleaning an awesome car every week or so- Get black [even if your going to mod, the black that infiniti makes is slick as hell]
3. Get Splashguards, Door Protectors, Tint, And Spolier(optional) if you can afford it, Very easy and cheap things that can make your ride look a lot sweeter if you don't plan to do big mods
4. Drive aggresive- You have a fast car =) have fun!

On Cold Starts....
If you live in really cold area - use Synth Oil for sure, warm up for 30 secs to a minute to allow the oil to start moving, and off you go.

Wizzathe1337 : in ref to the mods statement.... I can only speak for what my warranty says on my '05... which imn short is

- You don't even have to use Nissan parts to maintain warranty, you should keep records of oil changes and such. They even discuss Nismo performance parts, indicating the warranty on those parts may not be as long(since they are performance) but it in no way effects the basic warranty.

Also, unless it changed - the basic warranty is 4 years/ 48000 (mine is)
The Drive Train is 6 years/70000
