One big reason for not much people having coilover is that it is hella lot more expensive than springs alone. Almost 7-8 times.

Springs a way, way more cheaper than coilovers... If you are just planning on installings springs on the stock shocks... The shocks with eventually die sooner or later...

With coilovers... it's the whole set-up... you can lower or raise your car when you feel like it... you can set it to drag, track, or street...

It's all depends on what your looking for... Many just want the car to have less of a gab... then they just get the springs...

Coilovers!!

You are going to have to replace the shocks eventually if you go with springs. So why waste money to install springs and install shocks later, double labor cost.

The question is ... how often will you be adjusting your suspension set up.

Most people unless racing... would only readjust their suspension a few time to get it just right after installation. ANd then it would be set in that particualr setting.

BUT..... problem with adjusting your suspension hight... is you need to do a 4 wheel alignment as well. So is it cost effective to adjust the hight get alignment and so on and so on.

For those who do shows it could be better... cause they can slam the car down. But again.. cost of doing alignment (unless its a show car then who cares)

Springs are way easier. Just get the desired drop... BUY SHOCKs.. dont wast the time and money doing it later do it all at once. Then you are all set for a long time.

I think a really great set up woul dbe H&R and KONI. or if you go for coilover set up... H&R COIL OVER KIT $$$

try taking a look at silk road coil overs, my friend's shop has been shipping silk coil overs to a lot of 350Z owners.

OK, now I'm confused...

Admittedly, I'm a newbie to much of this stuff. I'm trying to read as much as possible, but sometimes it takes awhile to understand.

It seems that this springs/shocks vs. coilovers debate is more or less evenly split.

Could someone help the newbies out and post the following?:

Springs/Shocks:
-what they do
-versus OEM gotchas
-advantages/disadvantages versus alternatives

Coilovers:
-what they do
-versus OEM gotchas
-advantages/disadvantages versus alternatives

OR feel free to use some other format that can clearly explain about each choice.

My hope is that after reading a good knowledgeable post on this, a novice can understand what would be the best way to go to meet their suspension goal(s).

(If all of this info is already on a sticky, just point me to the right sticky!)

MANY THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE POSTED AND CONTINUE TO HELP THE NEW GUYS!!

coilovers are worth the extra money. the ride is much better since the shocks and springs are matched for one another. also, the adjustability is great when you need it. i ran KW's on my audi and will be getting KW's for the G as soon as it gets here. The good thing about KW's is the offer three variations depending on your need. variants 1's are just height adjustable and variants 2 and 3 offer differing levels of adjustment depending on how much you need. obviously the price varies with each one too, but a great product nonetheless.

What would one have to do to make adjustments on the height? Is it a laborous process or pretty quick.
Would be great to have the adjustable height at the flick of a switch like my in-law's LX470.

how easy the adjustment is depends on the car and how the shock/spring setup is. on my audi, the front was easy since the spring was around the shock and very simple to get to. on the rear, it was kind of a pain in the *** since the spring was separate and the adjustment perch was on the top of the spring which was hidden by the fender liner. just depends. also on the audi, you had to take the rear shock out to adjust dampening, which is why i went with the variant 1's since i knew i wouldn't need to adjust that. just depends on what you need.

If I could've found a linear spring coilover setup with 350lbs/in range, i would've
went coilovers. The lowest I found were 400lbs/in (type CS)which is close, but
it's still too high for me on this car while using 35 profile tires. I like to kick back
and relax when I drive my G35C. my current setup does exactly that with
absolutely no noise.
