G35 coupe 1004 Camsensor

Hey I have a 2004 G35 coupe auto with 170k miles and I’ve replaced my cam sensor almsot every other day now it keeps going out my slip light comes on my vdc comes and and my sel light. Sometimes when I’m driving at low speeds the motor shuts off as well. Does anyone have any idea why my driver side cam position sensor keeps goin out?

Because you aren't using a Genuine Nissan Parts or Hitachi sensor.

It's common knowledge these engines don't play nice with aftermarket sensors. Hitachi was the OEM manufacturer.

OBD2 scan your car if the check engine light turns on, that's the ECM telling you EXACTLY what the problem is. Protocol ISO 9141-2 is what the G35 uses.

You may have a loose wire or damaged connector. Look inside the plug in connector at the contacts. Make sure they are not bent or broken. Also, when you push the connector to plug it in, do you hear it click. If not, the plug locking tab could be broken and the plug comes loose from vibration and the contacts disconnect.

I've literally never heard of that ever but anything is possible. Maybe you have a defective ECM that's cooking the sensor.

It's more likely that there's damage in the wiring causing it to short to ground and overheat though, the sensor is literally nothing more than a semiconductor crystal sealed in plastic and epoxy resin. The reason it's strongly recommended to use a Hitachi or OEM Nissan is aftermarket sensors are SUPER sloppy about calibration / quality control on the semiconductor and notorious for using inferior grades of epoxy that crack as well as inferior plasti-welds on the seams of the outer housing. Wrong number of coil windings = wrong data sent to the ECM, bad epoxy/plastiweld = leaking oil (or humidity) into the coil and getting a wrong reading / premature failure.

At this point I suggest taking the car to Nissan for a 1 hour diagnostic. They are able to actually watch the data sent by the sensor and will be able to see what's going on. The only way to read that sensor data is with an oscilloscope which is an expensive instrument that most folks don't have available.

The G35 is simple to work on, obviously not quite as straightforward as a Honda K24 equipped TSX but definitely easier than the transverse mounted maxima. The Honda J35 engine in the TSX is a nightmare though, definitely rather work on a VQ35.
