2003 front subframe crossmember brace
2003 front subframe crossmember brace
Hi guys i need to replace this part (https://www.z1motorsports.com/front-...EaAghrEALw_wcB) . it is in really bad shape due to rust. Is it easy to replace for someone new, is it as simple as remove the old one and install the new one?. another question is the car safe to drive,
Yeah it's a fairly straightforward replacement, 6 bolts and two nuts, You can pick up a used one from eBay for less than half the price of new. Just make sure to take the replacement one you get and spray it down good with rubberized undercoating spray like the stuff from Rustoleum or 3M, then it won't rust out again in the future.
Bolts are torqued to 46 ft/lbs, the big nuts torque to 114 ft/lbs.
Also that thing isn't the engine crossmember like the Z1 page is describing, it's actually the "front suspension subframe cross brace" when you search for it, the FSM calls it "front cross bar".

I wouldn't use any rubberized coating. The problem being that once the coating is broken in any way, it will hold and wick water and begin the rusting process under the coating.
I just got done scraping the rubberized coating along my jacking rails of my mustang's global west frame.
Maybe something like nonskid would work..like rhino... but even that works itself free.
Use something like POR15 or other epoxy paint.
Also, unless your brace is total trash, I would wire brush it and paint it with por15.

The sedans didn't come with the cross brace..so you can drive it.
