Hydro Lock?

Ok, just curious if anyone has any idea of the amount of water needed to hydro lock a motor. It must be a decent amount ,because I know you can install mister jets on the intake to help cool a charge for turbos. So how much water is too much??

When the filter is completely submerged is when the problems starts. Then and only then will the vacuum be strong enough to start to "swallow" the water into your motor.

Only 1 reply to a bonafied question!!!!! I guess if I raced a Civic and injested water and locked it up people would reply! I can't believe this. Guess this is not an issue.

unless you have a cold air intake that sits extremely low and gets submerged to where the intake would actually suck in water, then you don't have much problem. i wouldn't go getting it wet intentionally though. and as for your misting theory, you are close. people with intercooled turbo setups often mist the intercooler with either water or NOS. this is to cool the intercooler and air passing over the intercooler, which in turn helps cool the air passing through the intercooler. the water or NOS isn't actually coming in physical contact with the air going into your motor.

Typically in those systems the mist is so fine the water vaporizes immediately prior to combustion - You shouldn't be pulling any significant amount of actual water into the manifold .. mister jets or no mister jets.

Unfortunately I don't really know enough to say exactly how much water it takes to cause hydro-lock - just that I wouldn't point to turbo mist kits as a parallel. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will have a better answer.

There are kits designed to decrease detonation caused by higher engine temps (due to FI) that mist water directly into the air intake path. I'm pretty sure this is what he was referring to.

Mr. Pink that is what I was talking about exactly. I have a new Nismo intake and it sits really low. When I was installing it I noticed water stains on the plastice and was wondering if I should be concerned. I've read people in Florida haven't had an issue so I guess it's good to go. Thanks for those responses.

As long as you have a bypass valve. If you do, sit back relax and be happy camper. If not, go out and buy one. Doesn't cost much and will save you a huge migrane in the event of your car hydrolocking.

The combustion space volume of a cylinder is 3500/6=583 cc/compression ratio or 57cc is enough if it all gets into an individual cylinder........
