Sorry for the stupid question. I'm new to this site and I'm considering a G35 Coupe as my new car.

On Infiniti's website, it says it can tell you if there is an accident or traffic jams if you have the navi unit. So how does the navi unit get this information? Do I have to pay some kind of monthly fee if I get the navi unit?

The nav doesn't TELL you if there is an accident or traffic jam. It RE-ROUTES you around an accident or traffic jam. I wish there was a traffic report option on the nav. It would make life here in Cali a lot better!

 

Maybe they're going to work with XM satellite radio. I heard that XM was working on a traffic monitoring system that would integrate with a cars NAV system and show you where there are accidents and traffic jams.

XM already has it as an add-on service to their satellite radio service, called NavTraffic. The new Acura RL's nav system has that capability built-in. The aftermarket Pioneer AVIC-N2 also has that capability.

It's not that unreasonable of a question. There are aftermarket computer systems for cars that can let you connect to the Internet, using satellite service. Satellite is a digital signal, so it can send and receive data just as easy as it can send and receive music. I haven't seen any factory units with Internet connectivity yet, but its coming.

 

the only thing with GPS is that the govt can track you. idk if they can tell your speed and ticket you anytime.

Hrm? how so? You're not sending any data back to them. Just retrieving the locations of the satellites to triangulate your own position. You can remove the tin foil hat now

It's not that far fetched, advanced communication NAV system is already in Asia. The NAV utilizes both radio and cellular signals to perform various functions from weather forcast, traffic update,and uses HDDs that can be updated from the internet data via memory modules. The US technology is slowly catching up, but we are still way behind.
