Has anyone fitted hood supports yet? Or is everyone still fumbling with the stock rod? What a PITA!

Re: Hood Supports,
yah i was thinking about it man, kinda like how the trunk has supports...... but thats just how all japanese cars are.....they love hood rods for some reason...
Hey where can we pickup a set of those hydraulic supports?
Im gonna go checkout the hood right now, im sure its possible to install them!
Just requires drilling of 4 holes, and who knows, maybe they are pre-drilled, hahahaha

EDIT: well, there arent really any pre-drilled holes but it can be done! Just gotta figure where to buy those hydraulic things

Re: Hood Supports,
My 2k2 Max had the supports. They sell a selection of them at different supply stores but we need the correct ones to be effective.

Re: Hood Supports,
What irks me is that my Accord, much cheaper than the G and Z has struts.

Re: Hood Supports,
thats because the accord is an american car, what i mean by this is that its built in america
I agree that the G should have came with the struts, even my friend's 84 cutlass has stock hood springs that keep the hood open for you

i guess its a place where nissan decided to keep the cost down

Re: Hood Supports,
Word of warning on gas strut supports. On my 96 Maxima. had to really keep the strut seals clean or they would leak and not support the hood especially when weather was cold. Many fellow Maxima folks on the Max org. forums had same problem. Personally, with our aluminum hoods the support rod is not too bad and pretty positive. I'd stay away from the aftermarket cylinder struts,,,,not worth the effort, expense and maintainence. Just my opinion.

Re: Hood Supports,
All my other cars have been bimmers so it came as a complete shock that the g35c didn't have the hydraulics for the hood. And as far as OEM hydraulics go, I've never encountered a problem with them .... so I think that should be a non-issue ...!

I'd be up for a GP/GB if anyone ever figures out a way to replace the damned inanimate rod!

Re: Hood Supports,
Bah, what would such a bunch of pampered-perfumed-pansies need to go lookin' under the hood for anyways? Next you'll want a polished manifold so you can check the oil and your make-up at the same time, you effeminate-silky-handerchief-waving-freaks-who-like-putting-pumps-on-both-their-car's-hoods-and-their-feet. Probably put lifts in your shoes too, you men-of-ambiguous-gender-who-are-threatened-by-the-phallic-symbolism-of-my-support-rod. And thanks to my manly support rod, I can close my hood without laying a finger on the finish by letting it drop from about 6 inches, which is probably twice as many inches as the likes of you measures.

To be serious, I miss my 900 Turbo's hood design, which opened by sliding it forward and then lifting upward from the end at the windshield, so that it stood up like a giant shield in front of the car. Always a moment of great manliness for me to have to show the folks down at the garage how to get it open. Usually followed with the "where's the ignition" trick. My G's support rod and centrally-located seat controls are a good try, but really don't compete with that.

Re: Hood Supports,
When I picked up my car, the salesman demonstrated how to close the hood. He said that I should not push down on the hood, but let it slam down from about 16 inches up. He warned that my hood is made of aluminum and may bend/dent if I didn’t this.

Now you guys want to put these hydraulic cylinders that will apply a lot of pressure to your hood. The OEM bar is placed far from the pivot point giving the best leverage point. Mounting these cylinders would put the points much closed to the pivot point, thus tremendously increasing the pressure at that point. You then would have to overcome the lock point pressure when you decided to close the hood.

Sure would hate to see a crease line in your hood.

Re: Hood Supports,
Good point dude...I figured there's a reason why Infiniti didn't put shocks in, not just for cost-cutting purposes.

Re: Hood Supports,
One of these days I'll retro-fit a set of supports. As far as bending the hood --- I close mine by just pushing carefully on the hood for the last 2" instead of dropping the hood. If your careful it wont bend.
Unmanly or not, I hate the damn rod setup, and it doesn't lift the hood up far enough resulting in my banging my freakin' head on the corner of the hood (ouch).
I'm one of those tinkerers that's always got the hood up, so it'll benefit me a lot.
When I've fitted them I'll post for whoever might like it.
