In the bigger cities in Maryland the cops almost exclusively use laser. In this case, there is almost no protection afforded by the detectors. I have driven by cops lasing people and not picked up the laser on the Passport. When I've knowingly gotten hit by a cop with laser, there was not a chance in the world the detector would have helped me one bit.

In smaller towns etc. the detectors are more worthwhile since the cops often can't afford laser units.

At home in Montgomery County, however, my radar just sits on the dash chirping at the automatic doors of grocery stores

The v1 is permanently upgradeable, so keep that in mind. When an all new one comes out, with changes in technology, simply mail yours in with $150 and you get the newer unit. Other radar detectors you'll toss, try to pawn on your friend, etc. This is the main feature that pushed me towards the V1. That and it consistently ranks the highest in unbiased reports. I don't rely on it 100%, but I drive fast everywhere I go (99% highway) and over the years I bet it has saved me in the $5k range in tickets and attorney fees (my driving record is spotless BTW), not to mention the time off work or the hassles.

The deal with radar, is that it's a tool. The people that say it's a waste or doesn't work, are people who think that they are going to install it in the car, and never get a ticket. You have to scan, stay aware, etc. If I'm doing 80-90 in the fast lane, I'm constantly checking the rearview mirror, onramps, and keeping a close eye on cars I'm passing. Do that, and don't speed on unfamiliar turf (I know the main areas that I drive, and have a good idea of where the officers will be if they are around) and you'll eliminate most of it. I'll disagree on the laser detection, I get warned on the V1. But you don't have much reaction time, I mean if that laser detection goes off, you need to respond with your foot deep in the brake in 1 second flat. And if you are the only one on the highway, they'll nail your ***. Most of the time with laser, around here anyways, the cop is in plain visible view, so if you are scanning ahead you'll see them. Good luck and happy speeding

RX-65.

Allthough I would rip it off and chuck it in the back seat if you ever do get pulled over. While even if they arent ILLEGAL in some states, a cop is never going to be happy to see a radar detector in your car.

I've been using my Passport Solo 2 for a several months now and it's worked awesome. I've picked up laser in time to slow down. Picked up K-band from almost 1/2 mile away. Batteries last a while too. I like the cordless look... don't like cord getting in the way of controls and what not.

Valentine 1!

V1 all the way! IMO, this is the best you can buy for $400 or less.

Well if the revenuers (cops) are going to hide in the bushes/trees, obstructed from clear visible view, what do they expect? I don't give 2 ***** if they see my radar. It's there job to catch me, and it's my job to get away with it. Happy hunting

About the best a V1 (even mine) is going to provide against a laser speed gun is advance notice to get your license and registration out for the cop.

unfortunately (for speeders), this is true. if your detector comes up with "LASER" on the display, it's pretty much telling you that you're already dead. 3rd party tests on several high-end radar detectors agree on this.

your only hope against laser is if the cop is shooting at the car immediately ahead of you, or if you have laser-jamming equipment.
