Reliability
Reliability
Hi, I am on the verge of working like crazy to be able to pay for this car cuz pops said I would have to finance this one my self, but being able to step up from an Integra to the top of the line G35c is all I can think about. But do you guys think I would be better off to wait for the next years coupe where they might have fixed the small issues that people are talking about, for instance: the gear shifting grinding sometimes between shifts, or any other little tweaks they can do because at age 18 the last thing I want to worry about is having to deal with is a problem in the tranny. Or do you guys believe that the first years production model is reliable, an honest answer is greatly appreciated!
Re: Reliability
Just get a 5 speed Auto. Only .2 sec's slower =) I was gonna get a 6 Speed but they didn't have any in stock and the last one on the lot was a 5AT and when I found out that it's only .2 sec's slower I grabbed it. Still fast as hell, don't gotta worry about changing gears threw traffic. I go threw Los Angeles traffic a lot...lol If u want to control your speed switch it to the Manumatic mode. I got one and have no problems what so ever. Love my baby hehehe =)
Re: Reliability
Manuals are in general more reliable than autos, just by virtue of being simpler devices - a heck of a lot more can go wrong with an automatic transmission down the line. Yes, people are seeing problems with grinding gears and whatnot with the stick but keep in mind that most of us are having no problems whatsoever with ours.
Re: Reliability
Manuals are more reliable that autos? Generally, but the G35 and 350Z manual boxes are breaking like crazy it seems. If you don't need a car right away, I'd wait till 2004. My car has lots of bugs.

Re: Reliability
No dude, In this case the A/T's are probably more reliable than the M/T's up to now. I've heard that Nissan is coming out with a durable manual replacement soon.

Re: Reliability
Does this mean that we'll get a recall? Or will they only replace your transmission if you complain?

Re: Reliability
No news how they'll handle the replacements bro. My guess is that as the bad ones appear, they'll replace them with the upgraded ones.
From what I've heard, the majority of manual boxes are just fine, so if and when the replacements happen, just the ones that are bad will get the attention.

Re: Reliability
if its a recall then they will send you a letter if you are affected
otherwise if its a TSB then they will swap out which ever has problems

Re: Reliability
im sick of people complaining that "EVERYONE IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE 6spd"
when only 4 or 5 people have been complaining on this forum, and the rest of us (at least 50 people) have ZERO COMPLAINTS about the 6spd gearbox.
That means the percentage of faulty gearboxes is less than 10%....then remove those that dont know how to use a short-shifter, i would say only 1% of the 6spds are faulty. But thats why we have a 4 year - 70,000 mile warranty!
I know a couple people on this forum are on their 3rd or 4th transmissions, that can only mean 1 thing....THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO SHIFT PROPERLY!
Almost 2,000 miles on my car, and the gearbox just keeps on getting smoother and smoother
I'll admit, im pretty new with manual transmissions, but i do know how to shift properly and i know exactly whats going on under the stick. That helps ALOT when learning how to shift properly.

Re: Reliability
bigel, you'll note I said IN GENERAL, manuals are more reliable than autos.
Obviously from the reports we're seeing the G seems to be the exception to the rule.
There clearly is a bit of a problem, but I think the tranny problem is overblown. For the people who are on their 3-5th tranny, I can tell you the problem is not in the transmission, it's between the seat and the steering wheel.

Re: Reliability
I would agree that in general, manuals are more reliable than automatics. They're mechanically simpler than automatics, thus less prone to things going wrong. My own experience mirrors this.
Out of the 7 cars and two trucks I've owned, all but 1 car and 1 truck were manuals. Never had a tranny or clutch problem with any of my sticks. But the one automatic car (bought new) had relentless gremlins, and I finally had to have the transmission totally replaced under warranty. I don't know if the new tranny lasted any better, because I sold the POS immediately afterwards.
I believe the G-coupe has a brand-new manual unit design though, doesn't it? And the automatic unit has been around awhile? If so, then the manual's reliability is obviously not as proven as the a/t.
So far, though, no problems whatsoever in my own G. In fact, I agree that the stick action is getting smoother.
