Clutch question

Is the G35's clutch stiffer than other clutches? I'm having some difficulty getting the right positioning to work the clutch and gas pedal. Lately, I've killed the engine after stopping. I seem to notice it more when I take my foot off the clutch at a stop light and then not getting the right feel after putting my foot back on the clutch. I guest my timing is off.

Also, is the heel of your clutch foot usually touching the floor or is it off the floor when shifting? I seem to do better with my heel not touching the floor. I wonder if the heavy duty floor mats (with grooves) that I installed is affecting my ability to slide the heel a little when shifting.

I'm not a G35 owner (yet) but I've driven one a few times and I find the clutch pedal feel is very poor. It seems stiffer than average and isn't linear feeling through the travel either. First time I drove the car, I stalled it; first time I've done that in many years.

I normally don't rest my heel on the floor.

Is your car 03-04 or is it 05? I had an 04 and the clutch was a lot heavier (for lack of a better term) than the 05. I think it's personal preference as to which is better, and probably has a lot to do with what you're used to. I'm trying to remember if my heel is on the floor when I shift, and I don't think it is?

I would definitely get rid of those all-weather rubber floor mats. I can't drive ANY car well with those.

good question, never put much though, its after driving manuals for so long i dont think about it. pretty sure my heel in on the floor cause since my car is an 05 and my clutch is extremely light, so not much effort to press in and our. Driven an evo and the clutch was much stiffer. I remember i drove a 04 6mt sometime last year and compared to my 02 alti 3.5 5 MT, the clutch felt quite soft. And people who drove my alti said my clutch was softer than their, but who know. like someone said it all depends on what your used to.

Chad,

I have an '05 . I like your wheels. I really don't care for the stock 19s, thought about selling and getting new rims. What did you do with your stock rims? And how much did your new rims cost?

Marfong, funny story about my stock wheels...

I ordered the Racing Harts with my 04 Coupe. When the dealer put the new ones on, they lost my stock 04 wheels! I told them I would settle for $1,200 in cash since that's around what I could get for them on eBay and I had planned to sell them anyway. When I got my 05 they put the Racing Harts on my new car, and put the stock 05 rims on the 04 I was trading in. Confusing, no?!

If I had it to do over again, I would keep the stock wheels and put them back on when I sell or trade the car. Because you will get no consideration for aftermarket stuff (and usually LOSE value because of them), but if the stuff's in good condition, you can sell them separately and recoup a little dough. That's my own philosophy after buying and selling many motorcycles and cars and losing money on every one!

I think the G's clutch just takes a little getting used to - i.e. more "routine" trips to the store to pick up milk, chicken, whatever for your sweetie

I shift with my heel off the floor. I don't know what professional drivers recommend (heel on or off the floor, or personal preference), but I would think for almost any driving condition off of a track you'd be fine using whichever method you're comfortable with.

I've been driving sticks since I started driving 10 years ago. Even took my test in a stick. When I got in the 6MT for a test drive for the first time I stalled it. It felt like I had no idea how to drive a stick. Everything was so different for me. For the rest of the test drive I was chirping the tires in first, second and third gears to get it going. Was also a bit nervous I guess...first time ever test driving anything.

Definately takes getting used to. That test drive is still the only time I've driven a 6MT G35 but looking forward to owning my own hopefully soon.

I think it would depend on how big yer freakin foot is!!!

My size 9.5....is off the floor to fully depress the pedal.

The G clutch is a little "funky" and takes some getting used to.

I never had a problem with mine. When I first bought the car it took a little getting used to but I never stalled. If I get into another stick car it will take getting used to as well cause it will engage at different levels. Do some squats at the gym and the clutch won't feel so hard.

I have my heel planted on the floor when clutching in or out. Seems to help a lot from jerking or whatnot when letting the clutch up because I can control it better. But that's for my gs-r... I have an auto G35.

The clutches in the 05 G35 are a lot different than most clutches. They catch really close to the top. Don't ahve to press down at all really to shift. To get a good shift in I only have to depress the clutch 20% or so. You're probably used to cars that the clutch cathes more in the middle. Took me a little while to getused to it, stalled it for the first couple weeks

The 04 G35C's clutch is pretty darn heavy. My heel is on the floor and pivots on
my heel. only thing I can suggest is to slow-down your clutch pedal's movement.

You'll get the hang of it in no time.

The clutch in the G stinks. Period.

The pedal is heavy and where it engages (up high) should be outlawed in a "sports car". Not to mention the shifter movement is slow and not fluid.

You are almost forced to heel-toe when downshifting in this car because it takes so long to shift from one gear to another. I honestly think the car would be 2 tenths faster in the 1/4 mile (at least) if it had a quick clutch that caught immediately.

I love everything about the G with the exception of the transmission (and the seats aren't very supportive on long rides). But, honestly, the transmission is a HUGE part of the driving experience of a sports car and this aspect of the G is sorely lacking IMO.
