I would imagine that it could vary from dealer to dealer. Just guessing, though.

i've read this a couple of times... but am having some difficulty understanding what u are exactly asking. if your asking will a dealer ask for a deposit to order a new car? then my answer is yes, it's pretty much guaranteed. amount? i assume this may vary from dealership to dealership... i'm estimating between 500-1500$us.

I assuming he means did they actually go ahead and "cash the check", or did they just hold it for you. Not sure though...

My dealer required a deposit, so we negotiated $1000 which was put down on the purchase of the G. and yes, he cashed the cheque.

a dealer just 'hold a check'... now that would be funny. maybe he should re-phrase what he's asking so that we can help him better.

My dealer claimed that they would do just that. Of course, I suppose a sales guy will say just about anything...

I'm pretty positive a dealership will cash a deposit check. It seems pretty stupid for them not to considering it's basically cash for them. The ordering process can take 3 months, why would they risk the check bouncing 3 months down the road while they can cash it and earn interest now?

Dealer charged $1000 deposit straight from my debit card and it came out ten minutes later, isnt that some sh**. But it does come off the balance of the price negotiated. My dumb a** forgot I put the deposit down then over payed a thousand when I wrote the check for 39K when I took delivery of it, lol. I got credited back 1000 though later.

That sounds like something I would do. Senility at the tender age of 38...

when i went in for negotiation, i put down a deposit, then when we agreed on a deal, i made a down payment (minus the deposit)

if that answers your question

I think it depends on the dealer. When we bought my G they asked for a $1000 deposit, we gave them our CC info, but they never ran it.

They wanted $1K from me at first. After running my credit, they decided that I could take it home (it was a Sunday) on a "temporary contract", with the understanding that I'd work out the rest once the banks opened on Monday. So I never actually gave them a deposit.

Yes that's EXACTLY what I meant. so it's like most of the time they cash the cheque

Yup, They sure do cash that Check. When I ordered my G they took a deposit of US$1,500.00 and was withdrawn the next day.
