5AT info

How do you automatic guys like it? Do the automatics have less horsepower every year, and why is that? How is the tiptronic/manumatic feature, is it reasonabley quick?

Thanks

the 05's are actually faster than the 04's...

theyre AWESOME!!! i totalled an 04.5 5at and got an 05 6mt. i like the 6mt so much better, but if youre an automatic guy, i would highly suggest it over any other car in the same price-range!

I have an '03 since new, and I think this is the best automatic I've driven (and i've had two BMW's). The tranmsision seems to hold gears longer than other automatics i've driven - it does not try to up shift at the earliest possible time. It always seems to be in the right gear in auto. The manual mode also works well, but under certain circumstance there can be a little lag, but overall I give the trans an A+. It has been pointed out many times on this board that in terms of the performace of this car with an MT or AT, there is very little difference (for 03 and 04). In 05 with the higher horsepower on the MT there should be a big difference.

It is curious why they only upped the MT to 298 horsepower? Since the AT is supposedly the same one as in the Q45, it certainly could handle the power. I think Infiniti did a dis-service to the exclusivity of the coupe by upping the hp on the manual sedan to more than the AT coupe.

5AT are almost as quick as the 6MT, providing you know how to brake stall launch and shift... you gotta adjust to the lag in shifting etc etc. but if you dont drive a lot in traffic and can get a 6MT ... go for it .... a Manual Transmission is just more of a car that and it has more HP in the 05's even though it has less torque than the 04's and 03's ... with the refined interior its definately worth it.

Is there any way Infiniti could put the 298hp engine with an automatic, could they do that for a special order? I was just wondering about this last night actually, why they didnt give the auto 298hp as well, it should have it.

I drove both and decided on the 5AT, mainly cause my new job is in Santa Monica, CA and traffic is horrible and I would never be able to use that extra 18 hp.
I grew up in sticks and I'm really impressed with this tiptronic. It is REALLY fun to drive for an AT

People always forget that not only did the new 2005 G35 6MT model gain 18hp, but it also lost torque, and the 5AT has more torque than the 6MT.

The 6MT might be a tiny bit faster overall, but I'm much happier with my 5AT at the moment, and this is coming from a former Vette and Porsche driver in manual. I used to dislike Automatics, but after this and my E55 AMG, these autos have totally changed my mind. Hell, the new 400hp GTO automatic runs faster 0-60s than the manual does.

Love the auto.. Great. Not slow - runs great.

I read that the new Mercedes C350 with the 7 speed auto is faster than the manual as well.

I keep saying - it's only a matter of time.

I like mine. Once you learn the MM mode, you'll be having lots of fun. The only thing you'll miss is having the clutch action. Get some ground wires and it helps with reducing the lag and with making it easier to double downshift more quickly.

I like my 5AT but starting to regret not getting the 6MT, for the fact that it just feels like your more in control of the vehicle with a MT, but then I get stuck in traffic in SoCal and become happy with my decision again. If only they would come up with a M/AT or a MM with a clutch.... now thats the ticket. mmmmmmm..... M/AT mmmmmmmmmmmmm............

5 At

i always preffered Stick shift, i drove the stick @ 2 dealers before driving the 5 at @ the third and I bought it. its more refined of transmission, and felt the 6 mt needs more development to fit the g. people who drive rx 7 or 911 will know what i mean.
