Interested buyer with a question about 6mt/5at

I have been reading posts from this bord for about a month now and i like what i am hearing so far about the g35. I am 21 and have owned a 95 Altima before and i currently have a 97 civic hatchback with a GSR engine. As much fun as it is to drive, i have to realize that its time to get a nicer car that i can actually drive over bumps and dont have to fix/tweek every weekend.
I live in NJ and there is a lot of traffic during my daily drive so my manual civic although fun to drive on open roads really six in traffic.
anyway, i was wondering if i would be happy with the 5AT trans over the 6MT. Overall, i think that the traffic/bad driving times with the manual are overpowering the fun of the times i can have with the manual. People that have the 5AT, is it still fast?? does it still have *****?? does it still have that nice deep hum with an exhaust and intake
thanx a lot

i have the 6mt... but the 5at is very very similiar 0-60 times, and of course top end is almost the same. the exhaust is the same, the engine is the same. if you're making a decision purely on your morning commute (traffic sucks!) then you will be happier with the AT, which you can still shift in sport mode. besides, i think the AT is actually a couple hundred cheaper?

Re: Interested buyer with a question about 6mt/5at

my decision isnt just due to the commute. I have driven many of the same cars in both manual and auto and i know that auto is faster because it allows you ro rev higher and change gears faster, but i was just wondering if the 6MT is that much faster/accelerates faster then the auto
thanx for the replies

The times are very close with the 6MT having the slight advantage. However remember, you have to be a VERY VERY good manual driver to 'overpower' the AT driver.

I have a 5AT which I very much love. The 5AT is great in traffic, fast like the MT, and you have the option to go into tiptronic mode and play around there. However, being an Auto driver my whole driving career of 3 years, I regret not going for a 6MT.

It's your call here. If you plan on heavily modding the engine, especially if going with turbo or nitrous, I'd really consider the 6MT.

Point blank, if you have the talent and will to do all that the manuel can do, the auto cannot and will not let you exercise that same talent and will. The design of the auto totally fails on that point, it is a pathetic sub for a manuel.

BTW, I have driven several teg GSR's, I know the gearbox well. They have one of the best gearbox/shifter/throttle relationships their is. My 6mt can click off shifts with the same speed and ease, provided you have adapted yourself to it in comparision to how honda engineers their manuel transmission systems.

It's a very good automatic as automatics go. You need to periodically reset the ECU to keep it sporty in Drive mode (maybe once a month), but the manumatic is pretty good for giving you a taste of MT when the opportunity arises.

I mean, you've driven both, so I guess the point is, it's not one of those ATs that you have to karate kick to get the car to move, it's well tuned and the car is highly responsive. But it's also not one of those extremely rare ATs that are as good as MT. It's very good. You just need to keep the ECU punch drunk.

Re: Interested buyer with a question about 6mt/5at

yes to all your questions.

I chose AT because of commute - I live in So Cal so that's a big concern. We have streetlights every half a mile out here in the 'burbs, every 100 yards in LA!

If you want to keep the fun factor up the highest with the AT, be sure to get the performance tire and wheel option - which is actually quite cheap. Then, you'll not only get the fun from torque and acceleration, but also amazingly speedy turns. I wish the car came with a harness - an over-the-shoulder seatbelt just doesn't keep me anchored! (but I'm a very petite person so... )

The one item that swayed me to the 6 MT is that it has Brembo brakes. If the AT had that I might be swayed. But I have always wanted Brembo. Besides there is nothing like shifting down and going into a corner and pulling out of it with manual.

Re: Interested buyer with a question about 6mt/5at

Both are cool bro. Mine is A/T and works for me. But then I'm not a 'purist' that a lot on our forum are. Those guys and gals need 6 M/T and nothing else.
Speed wise the 6 M/T should win a race, but only if the driver is good. The A/T is not quite as quick, but in a race it usually clicks off some consistent times, and is fun enough with the manual shift mode.
I guess it should come down to how much you will modify your G. The A/T will prolly not endure some heavy mods like the 6 manual will. Good luck with your new purchase. Both are nice and lots of fun in either body style...

Re: Interested buyer with a question about 6mt/5at

I love the 5AT, Its hella fast, I cant imagine the manual to be much fater. Especially if you are not a very skilled driver. After all the entire car is exactly same, except the brembos. For everyday cruzing and heavy traffic the auto mode is great, and for fun times the manual mode is sweet, you can drop it in any gear you want(assuming you are not going too fast for it) and have it accelerate much faster than in auto mode. I love dropping it into 3rd doing 60 and passing peeps on the highway. So if you use manual mode you dont really have the delay between hitting the gas and getting a response. I sometimes regreat not getting the manual, but thats only about 1 out of 10 times, 9 out of 10 Im soooo glad I dont have to row through the 6speed (which isnt the best one anyhow, where as I think the auto is great for what it is). So I know I made the right decision for me.

Wait, I thought that if you opt for the performance and tire package, that the brembos are included in that. Even if it is a 5AT.
