Hassle with only dealership in town.....

Hey Guys,

So I have been looking for a couple of months now into buy a coupe. I'm the kinda person that likes to do all my research well in advance to actually going down to the dealership and haggling. Well I finally made my way down there after I figured I was set on the car and everything I wanted and I was blown away at what they told me.
I was talking to one of the salesman about the prices and how a lot of you have only been paying anywhere between 500 to 1500 over invoice. He laughed at me!! He said that since they were the only dealership in town that they rarely even go below the sticker price. I was shocked by this. However, on that note, they didn't have the model I was looking for, which I only found in Santa Monica Cali. The next closest dealership to me is over 600 miles away. When I advised him of this, he told me that if you buy a car out of state you have to pay the taxes up front. I have never heard of this and not sure what that means.
I left the dealership kinda mad, and didn't know what to make of it. I know the car is nice, but I'm not willing to pay sticker price. What are my options to get the car?

Sorry for the long rant.....

Huh?

If you buy the car in state, you have to pay taxes on it "up front", I thought when you buy it out of state, you pay when you register, but Cali. could be different.

Anyway, are we talking 5AT or 6MT?

Just tell him you will buy the car today if he can get you the car for an exact price over invoice. If they know they can make a sale right now, they will be stupid not to do it. Most likely you might have to end up paying $1000-1500 over invoice.

Buy from Grubbs or from another dealership at the price you negotiate (I bought my '95 at invoice price), you will pay extra freight if from Grubbs, and they pay taxes at your county of residence. Then go to the dealership to gloat and for them to provide all warranty work. Do all maintenance elsewhere.

I'm looking for a '05 Black 6MT.

I could try telling him I'm willing to buy the car today, but they don't have the combo I'm looking for. So then they would have to order it which is the problem I am running into.

As far as the taxes go, would it be possible to buy in in Cali, have it shipped to NM and then register it here or would that not be worth the trouble?

Grubbs man. If it's that far, fly in and they'll pick you up at the airport. Then drive it home to break it in.
Warranty and maintenance can be done anywhere.
C.

I just checked out their website and it looks pretty enticing. I just couldn't believe how big of a dick the guy was to me. I will have to see what kind of price I can get from them and see if the dealership here will change their attitude.

I bought my G Coupe from a dealer in Baltimore, and I live in Florida (yes, I needed Caribbean Blue that badly). I had the choice of paying the Florida tax when I bought the car, or later when I registered it in Florida.

I researched the whole tax thing. My friend that bought an NSX did this.

I'm from Cali and I wanted to get a new car from Oregon (no sales tax there). My friend bought a car from Oregon. He used his friends address in Oregon (or you can use a PO Box). He registered his Vehicle in Oregon and shipped the car over to Cali. He drove the car approx 8 months with Oregon Plates. Then he registered it in Cali.. He didnt have to pay sales tax when he registered it in cali.. There is a law that within 6 months you register a new car you have to pay tax. But after 6 months you dont have to.. Thing is you gotta be careful and not get ticketed driving around with Oregon plates cuz its a hefty fine..

Well worth saving $3,000 bucks in tax. I might do it this way.

Repsol, are you talking about Garcia? I bought my G35 from them and their position is that they sell G35 coupes for sticker - no negotiation. I made an offer for less and they said no. They offerred to negotiate on a sedan, but not the coupe. They seem to move the cars pretty fast despite that and were more than willing to let me walk out without a sale. Finally, they did give about $700 more on my trade than I expected (at least according to kbb.com).

If you plan to buy out of NM, ask the dealer how they handle the sales tax. I think if you pick the car up at the out of state dealer, you have to pay that state's sales tax and pay to register it there to drive it home. You then have to pay NM registration fees when you register it here. If you have the car shipped from the out of state dealer to you in NM, then you take delivery here and only have to pay NM tax (fortunately, only 3% on new cars).

If you buy a vehicle out of state the dealer will have the paperwork for you to fill out so when you do the financing it all gets added in together. Then the dealer sends the tax paperwork to your home state and you are G2G (good 2 go)

Yep, you really should check with Grubbs. If they have to order a car for you, they'll knock $1500 off the MSRP without hesitation. Not sure how you'll do on something that's currently on the market. But their shipping service looks top-notch and is probably worth the money when you start to factor in the cost of picking it up (possible airline ticket, accomodations/food/gas on the return trip, etc.) Of course, you'll pay a little for the convenience as well, but that might be worth it.

I was going this route because my nearest dealer is 3.5 hours away. Grubbs is about 6 hours away. The closer dealer (Austin Infiniti) offered $1750 off MSRP to get my business. They got it.

That's exactly who I am talking about. They told me that they do no negotiating because they are the only dealership and have no trouble moving the cars. The Grubbs idea that everyone has mentioned seems like a good one, but it seems like somewhat of a hassle with the taxes and registration to drive it home since I live out of state.
What kind of savings do you think I can expect buying from Grubbs rather than a sticker price that I would have to pay from my local dealer? Would it be enough to go thru the hassle or should I just suck it up and get everything done here? Just asking for opinions I know there is no 100% way to tell.

I bought my 05 black 6mt from grubbs at $500 or so over invoice. They ordered it for me and I flew in and picked it up. It took 2 days to drive it back to the east coast, but I have family that I was able to spend a few days visiting along the way. They paid the taxes/registration in my home state so the only thing I had to do was get it inspected when I got home. I would definitely recommend it if you can't get better than $1k over invoice from your local dealer.

do you know anyone from oregon as well? seems like a whole lot of trouble to save on taxes. keep in mind though, if you ever get audited by the irs, they will figure out what you did very easily.

by the way, i also recommend getting your car from grubbs if you can't find a local/nearby dealer that will give you a good price. grubbs pricing with shipping will end being about $1500 off msrp for a 6mt coupe. they deliver to your door and will handle all the paperwork.
