Debating between a G35 or...

...an '01 CLK55. The clk is around $34k and it looks like '03-04 coupes are still hovering in the low 30's anyways. The clk has 25k miles on it and is in near pristine condition with some upgrades including 18" Brabus Monoblock V's, 2 headrest monitors, dvd player, nav option and the Designo Espresso package. Here's a pic:

I've test driven the G35 before and I think it handles great, very comparable to the 3 series. There are quite a few of them on streets here but then again there's lots of everything including porsches and a few exotics here and there. Given the option, would you guys go for a G35 coupe for $32k or get the clk for $34k? I realize it's a G35 forum, I just wanted some input.

Yeah, both would be AT b/c my wife doesn't drive stick. I'd get a used E46 M3 if stick was an option probably. Still love the G though and even if I go with the clk, I would still consider a G in the future.

I considered the CLK 430 myself before I got my 03G - my decision was based upon reliability and cost of maintenance. However, I didnt find as good of a deal on a Benz cuz I didnt look that hard. That CLK is a beautiful car - hate the interior color myself, but if you are ok with it fine. The biggest shortcoming of my G is the avg at best interior materials. I am coming over from a Lexus LS, so it was to be expected. Depends upon how long you plan on keeping the car as well. I think if its no more than 3 years, the Benz won't kill you on maintenance - if you are looking longterm, then the G is gonna be much cheaper to own. I get bored with cars really fast, typically switching every 2 years - I am already starting to think about my next car, and I have only had my G for 5 months. I would be really tempted by the Benz - good luck with your decision...

With inly 25k miles on it I'd probably have to go with the AMG even if I don't care for the color.

You can still get an M3 with SMG. That way, you have a pseudo-stick with an auto.

Looking at that CLK, I'd have to say I'm tempted like a hobo by a ham sandwich.

I'd have to do a good walkaround, put it on a lift, drive it, inspect the material condition, take it to a mechanic and let them peek under the hood, but at face value I'd love to be driving the AMG. You can beat on an auto, but not the same way you can beat on a six-speed. You'd have a little more exclusivity with the AMG as well, not that I'd make a decision based on that.

Maintenance costs and reliability play a part too. A new G is less likely to give you trouble.

Hard decision brah - let us know which way you go.

There's nothing like a virgin new car that you ever so gently break in...

My friend sold his CLK for the G35. His wasn't AMG, but im not sure if you're buying this for performance or what. I personally think the CLK is dated and the g35 is a different newer car so that would be my decision. G35

Yeah, we thought about that but I don't think she's for that either. I told myself if I ever got an E46 M3 I'd get a manual, plus the SMG would be too jerky for her in auto mode.

If you can afford any potential mechanical issues that crop up with an unwarranted Benz, get the CLK. I'm sure you could get a warranty with the Benz, but you would have to pay for it. I love the CLK55 (except that fugly interior color), but I'd go with the G for peace of mind.

CLK maintenance costs are pretty high. Most 01-02 CLK's will be needing these things pretty soon if not already done.

a services $300
b services $600
spark plugs $475
fuel filter $225
Lower control arm bushings $750
Lower ball joints $350
Drag link $500

The CLK is gonna cost alot more then the G35 will trust me.
