When to change brake pads?
Depends on the number and length and amount of pressure applied per mile! How many stops, partial stops per mile....Big city vs rural city vs highway vs. interstate miles.
Mild driver vs racer.
Not unusal to see a 3:1 ratio in pad life variance across all groups of owners.......15,000-45,000 miles.
Where do you and your driving style location fit in the range?
As the pads wear down from 9mm ----the insulative effect of the remaining pad material thichness is reduced, at the same time the radiative effect increases as the hot rotor gets closer to the calipers/pistons/brake fluid.........so performance goes away.
Smart people who care about brake [as new] reserve change pads BEFORE the oem minimums! Change and flush brake fluid with each pad replacement at minimum......every year would be better........to maintain near new boiling point.
AS New braking often means new brake materials.
Just owner paid replacement item like ALL fluids, tires, shocks, rubber bushings, belts, and isolators

When I got my rims on last week the place I brought it to suggested I get new front brake pads, they had nothing left he said. The rears were fine... I went ahead and ordered a set of Project MU-B pads, im putting them in on tuesday. BTW I have almost 19k on my clock
But dealer markup is 100% on many parts, therefore think of oem pads as $40 per axle.
You can by oem pads from INET Dealers for 25-30% OFF LIST
Pretty much all pads with oem backing plate cost the same to manufacture. There is no secret sauce [compound] every pad manufacturer KNOWS and has reverse engineered everyone else's compounds.........each has its own attributes and temperature range and effects on rotors.
Most aftermarket have 3-4 [so called secret mixtures] which are one size fits all........most never test on vehicles just copy oem shape/ thickness and SELL as the super performance pads............lots of luck in deciding which are better in your particular application..............lower dust = lower stopping power is the usual outcome.
