6MT vs STi - 70mph roll
6MT vs STi - 70mph roll
Always wondered how the G would do against an STi at higher speeds because of 1) much better aerodynamics and 2) similar power to weights after drive-train loss.
I had the chance this weekend (open 4 lane highway / no traffic).
This kid in an STi was on my *** for a few minutes, changed lanes and slowly passed. I match speed and hung next to him as an open stretch was coming up. We both had 1 passenger so weight was evened up.
(He appeared stock. I have JWT intake, Z-tube and plenum)
He hit it first...around 70mph, I did the same. Within a few seconds I started to gain on him...crept by him...and started to walk away at which point he shut down. We ended up at 120 or so.
I was very surprised. Figured it couldn't have been poor shifting on his part as at those speeds you really just have to hit the gas.
Anyone have a similar experience?
Love the STi and Evo for what they are...but for real world driving (i.e. highway driving) they don't seem to be as invincible as a lot of drivers think.

In a straight line race, the AWD actually hampers acceleration during a roll. The STI becomes a 300 hp car with up to 25% drivetrain loss. Those really great 1/4 miles times come from the excellent launch you get with AWD with 60's in the 1.7 sec range. Yeah, the WRX claims a 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds, but most consumers don't know it's from a AWD launch and not an indication of the car's power. The two cars have very similar weight and power, so I'm not suprised of the outcome in a high speed rolling start race. You have good breathing mods, add a Y-pipe or exhaust.
I have an 04 6mt, and at the time it was bone stock (now have greddy evo2) and i had almost the exact same situation occur a few months ago. The Sti was rolling next to me at about 55-60mph...we both hit it - he Fuucking smoked me! I redlined every gear, shifted well, and he still ended up about 5 car lengths ahead...HOWEVER, i later discovered that he has an upgraded BOV, full turbo-back exhaust, intake, and downpipe. I guess those mods made a huuuuge differnece in our two experiences.
congrats on the Sti kill - just look out for the modded ones!!!

I raced one....the first run he started behind me and I got the early jump and he didn't really gain much from a 30mph-80mph roll. We raced again from the same speed and this time he got the jump and he pulled about 2 carlenghts.
So maybe you just got the jump on him, but he should beat you, even from a roll.

DeanG35c6 - I've been looking for exhaust but lately have seen some good feedback on Y-pipes? Does a Y-pipe deliver similar whp returns relative to an all-new exhaust system? And did you put it on yourself?
Thanks for the info.

Chaz, were you stock? I'm wondering if the plenum and Pop charger/Z-tube made a difference. Then again, he could've been modded. A stock STI/EVO is hard to find.
Mpisor2, check the exhaust section of the forum. I recommend the Stillen as a complete exhaust, but the Y-pipe delivers about 50 to 60% of a full cat-back's performance. The most restrictive parts of the exhaust is the cats and the Y-pipe. I'm running Gruppe S with my resonator replaced with a high flow glass pack, but there are many to choose from. Oh, I didn't put it on myself, but I could've if I had a lift. It's very easy to do.

The STi isnt a good highway car unless it is pretty well modded. I've considered them before when I was selling my Supra TT and after driving them, the STi's pull very nice on the low end (surprising well) but lose out on the top end. The Supra was the opposite. It was purely a top end monster.
