XM micro antenna placement

Got a question about placing the XM micro antenna (NOT the stock one installed by dealer/factory that goes on the roof). The micro antenna is the magnetic one that is about the size of a 1/2 dollar. I had an extra one so didn't order the antenna in the "kit" from Grubbs. Has anyone else used this antenna and if so where have they had success putting it?

For some background, it should (obviously) be placed on metal and actually requires it because it uses the surface it's placed on to "enlarge" the antenna. Trouble is when I had the same thing on my S2000's trunk if moved it causes fine straches in the finish. I could just plunk it on the trunk again but don't want to have to deal with scratching my new baby. I've tried it in a couple places (underside of the trunk, rear deck) but nothing provides good reception.

I could also entertain a small circle of clear bra type material to place between the antenna and the trunk lid but have no idea where to get something like that locally.

Thanks!

Is there any place to put it on the rear parcel shelf? I cannot stand the shark fin that is on the roof of all manufacturers XM/Sirius/NAVI models. I think that is the dumbest and ugliest idea I have ever seen. I put a Pioneer AVC-N1 in my son's Jetta and we put the antenna magnetically mounted on the rear seat belt holder in the middle of the parcel shelf. Worked like a charm.

That's actually the first place I tried. What I'm doing right now as a temp solution until I have time to actually install the factory XM unit in the trunk is using my Roady2 from my prior vehicle and the built in FM Modulator. I ran the micro antenna into the back seat and placed it between the rear speakers. Started out a real strong signal so I figured I was golden. Then, about 1/2 way home from the dealer it started dropping out like crazy and would only peak at 2 bars reception.

If I had the stock antenna I'd surely put it on the parcel shelf.

I also think the shark fin thing looks like hell, but I gotta believe it's mostly free advertising for Sat. radio. When you see one, you know why it's there. I'm 100% sure they could make a totally inconspicuous antenna but then noone would see them, would they?

Here's a link to the antenna I'm using - obviously quite a bit smaller than the stock one - but worked like a champ on my S2000 - http://www.xmradio.com/catalog/produ...3&type=Antenna
