raced an IS300

As expected it wasn't even close, but my co-worker insisted that I race him in his IS300. I lost him on the entrance ramp to the NJ turnpike (our car is a lot better around curves). Then I waited for him to catch up, and gunned it again, and he was significantly behind me. His excuse was he had his moon roof open - excuses, excuses. I knew it wasn't even going to be close, but I thought I'd give him a shot, and put his trash talking where it belongs. I don't think it's worth racing him again .

Re: raced an IS300

Yeah, he's been talking a turbo, which would bring him up to 500HP, but it's $5,000!

No doubt about it man.. That engine is the same in the Supra hehehe... but that's a lot of bread to throw down for a Turbo...

Re: raced an IS300

it WILL take way WAY WAY more than $5000 to get 500hp

i say at least 20k... my friend got a turbo IS... just the engine work alone costs almost as much as the car.

Re: raced an IS300

Indeed, my wheels cost more than that, 5k for a turbo that would bring him to 500HP is unheard of, someone is smoking sumthin

do not be confused... the engine is technically the same engine as the Supra, BUT the Supra engine is a HEAVILY modded version of that engine and it costs a lot to get it to that state... read some posts on DTMpower.net about it...

Re: raced an IS300

Good point, aznshodan.
Just because it's the same block or designation, don't mean it's the same thing.

Heck, even the G35 engine has significantly de-tuned versions in other Nissan products that don't in any way compare to the performance we get in the G.

Besides that, ain't no one gonna make me believe you can slap a turbo on an IS300 and get 500 ponies out of it. Not a chance.

Re: raced an IS300

I don't know much about the turbos, but here is the article. It reads:

"This is a comprehensive kit including everything required to boost your IS300 to upwards of 500 horsepower."

Re: raced an IS300

If a turbo like that got the IS300 to 500hp that means we can get our G35s to 550-600 with that turbo for our car.

Re: raced an IS300

heh too bad they dont say anything about the transmission blowing out after a day's driving w/ that turbo on there

you would need an entirely new transmission in the IS300 (whether its manual or auto) so that it can handle the 232% power increase. So tack on another 6K to that 6K

The 2JZ is not the "best", there are many, many comparibly good engines out there. Also, in what sense do you mean by "best"??? reliability? efficiency? cost? longevity?

Re: raced an IS300

I have to disagree atleast price wise. You can make any car 500HP with enough cash. I think the point was that a $5k investment is not going to yield 500 RWHP from that engine. Heck with $5k you can barely squeeze that much juice from a Supra TT and that engine is bullet proof. I was actually gonna buy a Supra before I decide to get my G. I knew several people whom had built Supras when I worked at Toyota years ago. I was actually there when they rolled the IS300 into the Lexus headquarters. It's based on the same straight 6 block but is nothing like the Supra TT engine. That thing can take a LAW to it and keep rockin. That's how people can squeeze 800HP out of em'. So if that block in the Supra is the same as in a IS300 then we must have the same engine as the Skyline R34 right? He He.

Re: raced an IS300

actually for 5k on a supra you can easily get 500hp...easily....my buddy and I did it on his 93 mkiv supra for about $4500....bigger turbo...engine management....intake exhaust..chip...boost controller...huuge intercooler...etc...this was a couple yrs ago...dont remember exactly all the things we did off hand...but it was there....the 2JZ motor is a great motor...it has been out for a Decade in the states..that is why there are soo many affordable, reliable kits (mods) for it....Maybe once our motor is here for a decade we will be able to mod it as affordably.....IMO the 2JZ is one of the best motors on the market....The only difference between the MKIV motor and the IS300 motor is that the Supra (TT) motor has Internals and a bit of head work...so withstand the pressure....Stock TT 2JZ-GTE can handle almost 600 HP stock without any more internal work.
