Lightbulb I made my stock G tube into a Z tube!

I covered the silencer hole in the stock tube with aluminum tape for duct work, which, basically, converted it to a Z tube, and I used the same tape to cover the vents/holes in the bottom of the air filter box to cancel out the ait silencer in the air box as well.

The exhasut note is noticably louder! Give it try. It'll only cost you ~$5.00 for a roll of aluminum tape. I just hope the tape never comes loose and flies into the air plenum! I thought about using two part epoxy type glue to make sure that the tape never comes loose but was too lazy at the time to do it because I did not know if it would even make a diffence. If you do it, use glue!

I used a muffler patch and some epoxy on the inside on both holes. Covering the bottom hole from the outside will leave you with some turbulence as the opening is still there creating havoc on your smooth airflow - I supposed at the time anyway LOL.

Not sure why so many people pay for the Z tube. I got motivated after my Nissan dealer wanted to charge me 129 for it.

Z tube

I thought the Z tube is 3 inch wide and our G tube is 2.5 inch wide, which would also make the difference.

And the Ztube is more like $50 if you're willing to shop the classifieds. We paid $35,000 for our cars and can't afford $50 for a worry-free, custom work-free, genuine Nissan, non-warranty voiding part. Hillarious. Oh, and if the tape flies into your plenum, don't worry. You can cover the damages with the 50 bucks you saved.

I thought the same thing, but if that is true, how does the Z tube mount up properly without having reducers for the bigger diameter?

I am saving up for TT or SC so I did not want to waste $50~$100 on it. The better alternative to the tape would be to use expanding foam and silicone to fill the silencer in. The tape was just meant to be temporary to test it out. Since I don't drive it everyday, I am not too worried about it.

I am very good at doing things cheaply that work just as well as spending a lot of money. I am, afterall, a true DIYer. Flame on.

come on guys.....like what the other member said, you can purchase a z-tube for about $50 ($70 max). the use of duct tape (aluminum tape or whatever type of tape) is pretty sad for a $35k car. about the effects of the z-tube, i think theoretically, it would appear that it would make a difference. and dyno results with only the z-tube have confirmed a few extra hp increase. so, for those with the '05 6mt, 300 hp sure sounds better than 298 (similar to $99.95 vs $100!!!).

next up.....home clear bra with scotch tape and saran wrap!!!!

just keep running it at high rpm's then when it does fly inside the engine, it'll a) burn up, b) get smashed and ground up by the piston rings or c) just block only one cylinder intake. LOL. Spend the $50 already.

Where is this confirmed hp gain dyno?? I haven't seen it and if it was done was it done immediately after doing the first runs. If not, a few rwhp can change on any given day.

do a search on dyno runs. there were several dyno runs with a stock g35 and the same g35 with the z-tube. from what i remembered, it was a gain of about 3-6 hp. i believe it was done on an 03 and 04 coupe. but, this is old news.

THe G and Z tube are exactly the same size diameter. How else do you think it just bolts right in. Epoxy won't fly into your throttle manifold like tape may tho...and epoxy takes about 5 minutes to apply.

I'm sorry, but you really think alum tape is going to stay on there?
Does it ever get hot where you live? Because you of course realize that the adhesive will loosen.

I'm not trying to flame you, but just as an example I had a problem in my old Maxima keeping the filter in place (MAF adapter was not right). Instead of fixing it the right way (new MAF adapter), I descided to just use some alum tape to keep it in place. Well, as soon as it got hot (and it gets hot in your engine bay, trust me) the adhesive loosens and my filter kept falling off. Lesson learned: I did it "the right way". Just a little advice...
