worried about buying a 6MT now....

Hey all,

I have been reading around the forums and went and test drove a 6MT G. Absolutely love the car but I keep reading about problems with the 6MT transmission. I do not want to spend this kind of money on a car and need to change my transmission out every other oil change...like its routine maintenance. That may be an exaggeration and I know this forum has a limited audience and is not a good view of all the 6MT G's out there.

So please let me know how bad this trans is. Have any of you heard your dealer say that the trans in this car is no good?

What changes were made to the 2005 transmission?

Maybe they will fix it for 2006, which is the year I want to buy....think so?

Thats what I want to hear! Yes this will be my first MT. I have driven quite a few MT cars though. I've had an automatic for the past 6 years and I feel like i'm missing out . lol.

I haven't had any problems with mine, although I have only had it for a week now. I don't think it's as drastic as you say it is considering if there were that many problems with the 6MT I think they would have done a recall by now.

Not so much a recall, but more like if you have it, they will change it out for you. The 05 has a dual mass flywheel (diff between 03/04). And no, so far NO changes will be made to the 06 transmission according to a transmission engineer at Nissan USA (corporate).

According to him, this transmission is a "beast" (as he and the Japanese Engineers designed it for this year). The problems you mainly hear about of the 6MT on this forum were regarded as more of a "annoyance" than a mechanical defect.

He originally contacted me to have him and a Japanese Engineer check my own transmission for any problems since I noted it on my customer survey from DAY 1. He said if there is a problems, he will give me another transmission that uses "champion parts and is tested", all I would have to do is pick the day, dealer and he would have it done in one day. ( I just think it may be a ploy to check out durability of the "06 transmission" but he wouldn't tell me if it was 06 or not, in fact he said no, its just an 05 transmission).

Either way he cancelled twice on me, and the Japanese Engineer already flew back to Japan. But I got his name and info and told him that IF I ever run into dealer hassles if something ever goes wrong, that I am calling him, since he knows about it from day one.

Nothing is wrong with these transmissions, they are just louder than usual. If you notice something, then call and make an appointment or wait till your first oil change and make them note it in the computer along with the miles, if it continues, then make them note it/check it out on your second oil change....that way if anything goes DRASTICALLY wrong (mechanically, not just audibly) then they won't hassle you and say its your driving...thats the key, simply keeping the dealer in the loop from day one.

6mt

I bought my '04 with 7.5k miles, and going into 2nd and 3rd was very notchy like the sinchros weren't aligning at the right time, but now at 12.5k miles I'm feeling it a lot less. No more problems going in to 2nd, but I do feel it going into 3rd once in a while. During my oil change I told Infiniti to look into this problem, and they stated shifting is normal. As long as it's under warranty and it drives, I'm not worrying about it. And I love it. I actually love the vibrating of the ****, which I think is due to it being so short and connected directly into the driveshaft. Good luck.

i ahve had my 05 6mt for about a month and the only thing ive ntoiced is the notchy shifts. but that is nothing major. other than that it shifts great and is a hell of a machine to drive. go with the 6mt and feel it for yourself.

20k miles and i'm fine

seems that all the issues people are having are at least under warranty though, so if it does happen it would only cost the pain of dropping the car of at the dealership.

Thanks guys, I feel better about the transmission in the G now.

So the only change between the 03-04 MY and the '05 is the dual-mass Flywheel? What does that change?

I really wanted a 6mt but I can drive a car out of warranty within 2yrs. My 04 has 54k miles on it already.

I am seriously contemplating getting a second vehicle (around town work car) but I'd be fooling myself if I thought I would drive it everyday instead of the 6mt if I got one!

It just means that the damper springs of a single fly wheel are elminated by using springs in between the two flywheels...changes nothing but the fact that if you want an aftermarket clutch, you WILL want to get a flywheel combo with it...

My trans is a bit notchy, and the shifter definitely vibrates, but from the G's I've test driven and friend's cars I've ridden in, I think it's normal. I've only had mine a couple of weeks, but no problems yet!
