Has anyone experienced clutch chatter with there brand new G35. I notice it while coming out of first. I also hear a lot of vibration while shutting the car down.

 

yup, completely normal. I had the dealer look at mine and they took the whole clutch apart and said it was fine. When you shut the car down if you have the clutch depressed it will not make a noise. Otherwise it is just an annoyance, it does not affect performance.

You can further reduce vibration on shut down by having the car in neutral. My 05 chatters, but I'm beginning to wonder what the real source is. Other cars with this much power that I have driven have much heavier flywheels than the G. When I have enough revs on, no chatter. I find cars like the Mustang, Vette or M3 are far easier to launch "lazily" than the G, without all the drivetrain racket that is so prevalent in the G. I'm beginning to wonder if it's a lack of down low torque (all things being relative of course) and the (again, relatively) light flywheel that make it more of a challenge to depart from every stoplight with finesse and dignity. The G is no Carrera GT in this department, just a little more work than the aforementioned. I had my friend who owns an M3 and Mini Cooper S out for a drive the other night. My poor car. It took my buddy almost the whole drive to acclimatise to the throttle, clutch, and gearbox (reverse is over where? Are you sure I'm not gonna miss 6th and stuff it in reverse?)
BTW, my 05 clutch is better now at 4K kms than it was new.

 

^^ Haha and when I first sat in an M3 I I thought I might put it in reverse instead of first by mistake. I don't know how breakin and the clutch are related, but the chatter disappeared after 1200 miles. It's going to be there if you don't rev it enough. But is the G THAT hard to operate smoothly compared to other cars as far as taking off, shifting smoothly, etc? I'm curious because the only manuals I've driven are Gs and Zs. I don't know any better so everything people complain about is normal to me..

 

I had the same problem took it to the dealer and no problem everything is normal. If you're talkin about when u let the clutch out somtimes it chatters or almost like a shutter then I had the same thing. Its gotten better but I still get it sometimes epecially when I first start it up in the morning. Clutch is very noisy, wonder what an aftermarket clutch would sound like.

 

The clutch on these cars suck. Period.

The biggest complaints with the clutch are chatter/shuddering, premature wear, and hot spots. Mine is back at the dealer now for the 3rd time for clutch chatter issues after a transmission replacement and clutch replacement. The transmission isn't any better than the clutch is - early models suffered from syncho failures, throw-out bearing wear and noise, and linkage problems.

It's amazing how the automatics in these cars have been very reliable and durable, but the manuals have been disasters.

I've had the car for 26 months now, of which it has been at the dealer for warranty repairs for one whole month combined so far (mostly transmission/clutch, and rattle issues), and its not done yet! It's a good the G35 sedan loaner cars they keep giving me are fun to drive too (even though they are autos).

 

03-04's didn't have dual mass and people report zero of the problems we 05'ers are complaining about. Yet at 5K miles my clutch repsonds better and has less chatter at take-off. I'm sure it's NOT the clutch breaking in at all. It's just driver adaptation to the beast, learning how to drive it properly I guess. Now if only that clutch rattle in first would go away. I pull into the parking ramp in the mornin and roll up the windows so I don't have to hear it reverberate all thru the parking ramp.

Really? Interesting, so it's not just the dual mass flywheel on the 05s. Probably something else then heh? Why don't the Z's have this problem?

 

03s and 04s have problems with grinding gears (2, 3 , 5th most commonly..), I'm yet to see someone with an 05 complain about grinding. And clutch chatter is common in all years. Clutch sticking to the floor is a strictly 05 phenomenon.
