Question about 6MT shifting.

While driving normal, clutch-shift-clutch, when I shift into second I feel two notches, doesn't go right in but stops for a second half way and then goes in all the way. Is this normal? I feel it in third sometimes, but now always. Not sure how else to describe this. Hope it makes sense Seems more noticeable if I shift faster.

This is my second manual car, so I do know how to drive it. But who's not to say I'm driving it incorrectly, lazy clutching perhaps? 6K miles, and I think its been doing this since day one.

Search for other threads, but it is very common. I have the same problem, although 2nd gear hardly ever does it anymore. Third I feel it a lot, although when I press the clutch and slowly shift from 2nd to 3rd it is smooth. I mentioned it to the dealer and said it's normal.

Yes it's normal, hence the term "notchy" that you'll see on these boards when describing the gates on your gear box.

once the tranny oil is warmed up and you get the timing right on the throttle roll off
and clutch-in, you won't feel the knotch any more.

I think what you're feeling are the detents for 1 st, neutral, 2 nd and 3 rd gears.
My 6 MT with 1200 miles still has it.

That's what notchy means? then yes notchy. I guess I have read many other people mentioning the same "notchy" feeling. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't because I sometimes don't completely clutch to the floor, more sorta lazy/smooth sometimes. Zero grinding of course, I'm not that lazy.

What you are feeling is normal. It's because you are trying to "shift faster".
The syncro's will do their thing, regardless of how fast you try to shift. So if you are trying to shift too fast (fast n furious style), you will feel the slight delay.

Moral: find the right timing (how fast you can shift, without a delay), and be gental

I've slowed my shifts down, but then feels like I'm riding with my grandma and her slow shifting BTW, the synchros should be covered up to 60K anyways right. Now that I think about it, I had to have my tranny replaced at 40K in my MT galant. Maybe that was because I would go around corners, redline it, and then drop the clutch in second. Not sure tho....

Hmm...wonder if towing around my old jetski had anything to do with it. Before it crapped out completely it locked up in 3rd, now THAT was an interesting drive home.
