only time i notice a clutch being diff from others is the first 15mins im on it. after that, i get used to it. probably due to driving standard my whole life, in traffic worst than NY or LA.

if you're any true blooded MT driver, your driving habits adjust quickly, whatever MT car u drive. so no complaints from me.

arizonag35coupe......i asked my dealer about 2 months ago if they'll be able to adjust my clutch (05 mt) and they told me there's nothing they can do since it is self adjusting hydrolic clutch.
did anyone else go and got their clutch adjusted? i wouldn't mind getting the friction point slightly closer to the floor for easier stop and go driving. i also wouldn't mind getting a "heavier" feel on my clutch as well. i felt the 04 clutch and it was a lot heavier (which i like better).

Your dealer is either lying or doesn't know that the clutch can be adjusted for a lower engagement point. There are a lot of other threads about how this can be done. I would say that you should either take it to another dealer or just figure out how to do it yourself (I went to my dealer since I didn't want to run into any warranty issues). Trust me, if you don't like how the clutch comes stock you will love how it feels once its adjusted.

I agree! Before I got my 05, I've read numerous posts about the clutch and DIY adjustment. I remember thinking that it would be the first thing I'd do when I bring it home from the dealer. Well, when I drove it off the lot I thought 'Why?' By the time I got home (12 mi away), it felt just right. To each his own. BTW, all the cars/suv I've bought were MT.

our clutch absolutely sucks. I have driven stick all my life now (~21 years of driving) and this is absolutely a disaster. high engagement, chattery as all he1l and 1-2 shifts are whiplashing me half the time.

Any aftermarket options on this? I would gladly buy a new plate and flywheel - if one existed that ditched the chatter and made for a smoother engagement. The high point, I can get used to (cramps in muscle and all).

BTW: racing setup - no clutch. It's a speed shifter that you click through gear 1.2.3.4.5, or it's a hydro actuated setup with paddles.

So all: please post about aftermarket opportunities!

I have not noticed any chatter on my 04 6mt coupe and have been driving stick for quite some time myself. As for 1-2 shift whiplash...you got me confused on that one. You are just not shifting smoothly enough, its that simple(unless there is something wrong with the clutch itself). While this car may be setup to lean in the direction of being a tad jerky, ultimately if you have moderate experience with manuals you should be able to manage it quite easily.

Would like to take a ride with you to see what exactly you are doing or experiencing because I honestly don't have any trouble with this whatsoever. You ever drive any other 6mt G35s with this problem?

I'm still trying to get used to the clutch. I've driven in for 200 miles so far, and it's brand new

I first noticed the higher engagement point after 100 miles of driving and was like "whoa, i dont have to push down too far". For some reason though, i've been driving with the higher engagement point, but i've grinded 3rd 2x because of how high the point is, you don't realize how far you're pushing down. I really like the point, and will get used to it, but on a side note, how bad is it to grind a gear for a second?

Exactly what I'm talking about! Before you try with another clutch setup, try adjusting it, it will really help.

arizonag35coupe: I believe that you and the dealer are both right. You can't adjust hydraulic clutches but on many cars, and based on your post I'm assuming the G35C falls into this category, you can adjust the clutch pedal height. So if the clutch pedal travels too far before engagement, you'll fix the problem by lowering the pedal. You've got to be careful here because if you get too carried away with the adjustment and lower the pedal too much, it's conceivable that you could have your clutch always partially engaged which would not lead to a long clutch life.

If it's a manual tranny it has a clutch. Now there are manual trannies like those on F1 cars that don't have clutch pedals. BMW offers the same technology with their SMG trannies and Audi has the DSG. Although neither car has a clutch pedal, they both have clutches.

Most of this is drivers failing to adapt. The 14lb JWT flywheel forces you to shift quick and modulate the clutch to operate smoothly. This is more exagerated when the AC is on. Stock setup isn't that bad. Try a 8lb tilton setup with the clutch and flywheel weighing 16 lbs.

I agree. Actually I like the clutch in my G35C more than either the ones in my E46 M3 or 996. I especially didn't like my M3's clutch. I believe my left calf grew about a 1/2" because of the pedal effort. Actually the only thing I miss about my 996 was the sound. My 996 was equipped with the optional sports exhaust and man did that car sound sweet. Also, although my 996 had about the same HP as my G35, the 996 was much faster. The reason is that 996s weigh a little over 3K lbs or about 500 lbs less than a G35.

All my shifts are perfectly smooth, instant grab, or anywhere in between. I have no problem with this clutch at all. It's adapting to the sensitivity that's key. I gripe about the chatter, yet I can avoid that most of the time. The high engagement point lets you tap the clutch and shift quick, makes for some fast a$$ shifts. When I get on it, I can definitely shift faster than most automatics.
