Do cops give you hassle for no front plate?

I just wrecked my G! $5,000 worth of front end damage. I know it sucks, but I had insurance thank god. I wanted to know if I should have the body shop drill the holes for my front plates or not. It is illegal in Chicago to drive with no front plates, but people do it all the time. Have any of you had experience driving their rides with no front license plate (in states where your not supposed to of course)?

Thanks....

Yeah here in VA I had no plate on My Achieva SC for over a year, and I have had no front plate on my G35 since I have bought it. So far, so good. If they do, I'll pay it.

Most of the Vettes I have noticed around don't have a plate either.

At least do it until you get a fix-it ticket...that doesn't even go on your record...even when you get a fix-it ticket, you can get it signed off by just using double sided tape for the inspection and that way you won't have to drill holes in your bumper. Then carry around the plate in your trunk, keeping it mounted on the holder...and if you get pulled over for it again, just explain to the officer that in order to mount it on there...you have to take it to the dealer so they drill special holes in the bumper...and that's why you've been carrying it in your trunk

my G35 doesnt have the front tag and the dealarship i bought it from said as long as the car doesnt have it installed when u buy it, the state doesnt require u to have it. I live in Va and really like the look without the front tag.

Guys you don't have to drill holes in the bumper or use double sided tape. There is a Lic. Frame holder made specially to fit in the square tow-hitch door in the middle of the bumper. There are several people I have heard on this forum talkin about it. Just go buy one (don't know where, though) and then when or IF you do get a fix it ticket you can simpley "snap" the plate back into the bumper and get the ticket cleared. All you need to do is remove the tow hitch door and "snap" the frame holder into place. I'm sure someone here can post some pix. Of course if your from Cali then you know that they are working to make the front plate tickets an automatic $90 fine just like the tint tickets. Just and idea though. Peace.

No front plate and no problem yet. Been almost 4 months driving without it.

Re: Do cops give you hassle for no front plate?

Been doing it for half a year in Massachusetts, but there's still alot of cars around here with old plates that don't have to carry a front tag yet, so I suspect the cops don't look closely for that. And as soon as I get over one of the nearby state borders, nobody can say anything. I had to get plugs for the drill holes on mine, however, and there's a couple small notches where the dealer-installed bracket pressed into the bumper.

Has anyone come up with an easy pop-in, pop-out mechanism for mounting it in the tow hitch opening? The methods I've seen still involve screwing and unscrewing stuff behind the bumper. Something spring-loaded would be nifty. But either way, I think if you screw around with removing and replacing the plate too often you're going to end up with scratches, which may be worse than having the plate full time.

Re: Do cops give you hassle for no front plate?

JDman, Did you see my post above? Somebody posted a while back that he had a plate holder specially designed for that notch in the bumper. He said it just used to plastic clips the "popped" into the to hitch hole. I would assume that it was something directly from infiniti. I'm sorry I don't remember whom it was but maybe that almighty search button above will work, . Peace.

Re: Do cops give you hassle for no front plate?

In MD you're required to have front plates. When I picked up the car it was 8:30 at night and all the techs had gone home. I was told I could come back later and get it installed but I like the look too much. I met a guy at a recent G35 Club ride and he had just gotten a $90 ticket for not having his front plate. Now he has his front plate on. If you guys figure out who or what this miracle snap on product is post it. I've been driving without it for 7 months. We'll see how long my luck holds out. I even got a speeding ticket in March and he didn't say a thing.

Re: Do cops give you hassle for no front plate?

I'm from the Chicago area, and the dealership said it was my choice to have the front plate put on - I said no. A friend of mine also has a G35 Coupe with no front plate, and she got a ticket in a parking lot for it! I've had mine since March w/no plate and no ticket. But keep in mind for late night driving, cops are looking for *any* reason to pull you over (hoping to catch a DUI).

Re: Do cops give you hassle for no front plate?

Had no front plate on an explorer way back when and it ended up costing me a night in jail! Like Kdog said it gives cops a reason to pull you over and then they can go from there on other stuff. I learned a very expensive lesson that night and have had a front plate on ever since.

What were you doing that got you into jail? I can't imagine just not having a front plate would do that.
