Engine Feedback Through 6mt Shifter?
Engine Feedback Through 6mt Shifter?
Hey guys, I had taken it as being a cool muscle car type thing, but just to make sure...have you guys noticed that you get a lot of shaking through the shifter at idle or on load? How about when you're at a dead stop and you simply rev your engine hard, do you notice that the car sways from side to side a little?
I'm just making sure its a cool feature and not a bad motor mount or something.

Re: Engine Feedback Through 6mt Shifter?
Yep, this is totally normal. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Between the stick and the steering wheel, the feedback is amazing on this car. So much so that when I drove my friend's BMW it just felt numb.
Re: Engine Feedback Through 6mt Shifter?
I noticed it too...But didn't get wound up about it. Had my cousin get in the car and work it (lightly) through the RPM range while I was under the hood...motor mounts seemed solid.
Now, this may be an old wive's tail, and/or not applicable to modern engine/tranny combos--but my hand comes OFF the shifter when not actually shifting...seems I remember from a long time ago "that's bad for the shifter/clutch..."
Drive it like I stole it?
Hell...drive it like I'm making payments on it...

I wouldn't say I'm "wound up" about it, I just wanted to see if others are seeing the same thing I'm seeing. I also think that what you said about having your hand off the stick was actually something about going blind or growing hairy palms though. Don't you have a girlfriend or something?

lol...seriously...I got a fiance, but then again, I do work offshore...
Of course, growing up in South Louisiana, you have all manner of wives' tales to deal with...I can remember my grandpa telling me to keep my hand off the shifter unless I'm shifting or "you'll burn dat shifta, boy..."

Re: Engine Feedback Through 6mt Shifter?
Ballzy,
The sway you're noticing when you rev the car at a stop is from the engine torquing over. It's perfectly normal. Thanks to new technologies and improved mounts and such it isn't as noticeable as it used to be, but in the older musclecars, the torquing of the engine when you rev it at a stop was so bad that when you looked under the hood you could see the engine move 4 inches or more from side to side. I've even seen instances where a car would launch hard, and literally twist the entire frame of the car from the force of the torque. Wild stuff.
As for the feedback in the shifter, I've found mine to be very well mannered, with only minor vibration. If I get on it I'll feel a little feedback from the torque, but suprisingly little. Then again, I've probably only trounced on the gas maybe twice since I took delivery of it - I usually get all the power I need and more from part throttle acceleration (one of the things I love about this car!!)
What you're describing sounds perfectly normal though, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Engine Feedback Through 6mt Shifter?
yeah the shifter vibrates minimally.......until you go over a bump THEN look at the shifter.....heh the whole thing MOVES!
It reminds of some car's tailpipes that are not mounted good, so whenever their car goes over a bump, you see their tailpipe move as if its loose and about to fall off from the body...
I just think its weird that the shifter moves this much when going over a bump (lots of bumps here in detroit)
