Notchy Shifter: Technical Explanation?
Notchy Shifter: Technical Explanation?
I've heard this topic before and have been doing some research. I only have 600 miles so far but its driving me batty. My new coupe has the notcy shifter action sometimes and other times its smooth as butter. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a technical explanation of what is causing this and any ways to minimize it. Finiti said its just the way this tranny is and that plain sucks. We are going to change the tranny oil to see if that helps any.

it's notchy yes, but 05s should have improved over 04s in terms of effort to shift (try driving an 04). no use changing the tranny at 600mi, it's just the characteristic of the shifter. you just have to get used to the gates and it should slide in easily over time. some ppl like the notchiness and not being rubbery, others the opposite.
i'm gonna be switching my tranny fluid to synthetic before the next winter. last winter i found it extremely difficult to shift into 1st and 2nd. sometimes triple clutching was necessary until the car totally warmed up. the syncros just have a really hard time in the cold with the current fluid that came with the car. i can only hope that synthetic helps the situation.

You will be very happy....no more notch...no more 1....crunch 2 shifts....mobil 1 gear oil is a beautiful thing
Hmmm... well i guess i'll have to live with it. If I did change the oil would Factory oil be as good as the rest?

I have 05 6spd and the shifter does not bother me although it does require a bit more effort than the audi a4's (to give a random example). But you have to keep in mind that it is much harder to make a smooth transmission that handles 300hp than one that handles 200.
To reduce notchiness you can try matching rpm. Matching rpm also lets you shift without depressing the clutch all the way.

Do you try to do quick shifts or take it fairly slow?
I've never taken apart a tranny so I never visualized what happens in there. Sorry can't give you a technical explanation.
Since your car is so new I would suggest pausing for just a moment in neutral and slowly push the stick into the next gear in between shifts. This will let your synchros match the revs of the in and out shafts before the gears are engaged. But if you really want to jamb the stick in then double clutch when you are shifting.
It takes time to get used to shifting any manual transmission that handles this amount of torque. I bet by the time you have a few thousand miles the tranny will feel as smooth as silk.
