So i got a quote today on mounting balancing and buying two rear michelin pilot sports like the ones on the car now.....$578!!! i know they are expensive but does it have to be done. Does anyone know of a good tire that i coul replace the whole car with or maybe just the rears for a better price, provided it is a good tire with some sort of life to it?

Please any suggestions will help. Tell me what you have gone with or have heard about. Thanks

The rear Mich's are too expensive. I was quoted a total price of $552. I'm buying the Yokohamas AVS ES100. I will let you know tomorrow how the ride is when I have it on. It will cost me $376 (including tax, lifetime balancing and mounting).

 

so ur mixing and matching tires....what does everyone think of that? i wasnt sure if i should or not

 

Personally I'd switch all 4 to another tire so that later on I could do 2 at a time. Handling will definitely be worse with 2 different tires.

 

I think as long as the rear are the same, it should be okay. The discount tire guy told me that the ride shouldn't be that much of a difference. I used to have Yokohamas on my ride, and the tire grips pretty good. The only downside to this tire is the tread wear.

Do you really think that:

1. the front tires don't direct water out of the way of the rears.
2. the front and rear tires are not designed to work together.
3. the different traction, treadwear ratings, tire temp ratings won't be a problem especially when spirited driving takes place.
4. the VDC won't be thrown off when traction is different from front to rear.
5. the breaking characteristics of the car won't be affected at all.

This is some of the worst advice I've seen given on this forum in quite some time. Where's Q45tech when you need him.

If you MUST only replace the rears, at least do it with the SAME make and model of tire. If you want to save some money, swap out make and model the next time you replace all 4 tires.

Remember, tires have almost as much to do with stopping the car as the brakes.

 

When I had my 03 5at I replaced the rears with the Toyo Proxies first then I think next year the fronts to same tire. I did not have any issues at all with having michelins up front and toyos in the rear. I will do same thing with my 05 6mt when the rears are done, probably will try out the BF Goodrich G-Force this time, they are are very well priced and seem to be great performers from what I read. And as far as the Proxies go ... they were like 2/3 the price of the michelins and 90% of the performance.

 

what about the wear and tear on the tire do you get some tread life ...and i know they are performance but some tread life

 

If u change the tires ... change them all. I worked for a body shop where more than half of the cars that either came in because they slipped or couldn't make the turn had different front and rear tires.

even if u have to wait a few months to replace them all go ahead and do that. it is way too dangerous.

I currently have 27K on my car and have the original michelin pilot sport tires ... i cant afford to change them all now so i'm just not driving as much until the end of the month when i will change all 4 of them. The quote i got from www.discounttires.com is abut 1000 for all 4 after dealers discount (couz of the place i used to work at). Try tirerack.com they have good deals too.

Like I posted above I have had different front and rear and I drove my car hard, always (VCD off) ... never any issues ...if anything it would be more dangerous to wait until the fronts wear out because the rears will be bold, making it dangerous, especially in the rain. I think as long as the tires are comparable performance wise there shouldnt be any problems. but if you have ultra high performance in the front and all seasons in the rear, then yea I would totally agree ... danger. But then again I never worked for a body/tire shop, just did it and drove it.

 

well of course it is dangerous to drive around with bold tires. when i said wait i meant ... "wait and dont drive it" especially in the rain. i drove my G a couple of weeks in the rain and it was pretty bad ... I've been driving it only on sunny weekends since then ...

 

As with everything else use a good judgement and common sense. I don't see a problem with putting different tires on the rear, as long as you drive accordingly. If you putting worse tires than michelins, then of course you cannot drive as aggresively as with michelins, and if you putting on a better tires, that have better grip and better performance, and you keep in mind that you still have michelins up front, than I don't see a problem.
It is definitely not recommended to use 2 different kinds of tires on same axle.
