G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
last time a girlfriend told me i couldn't do something with MY money, i told her"
"honey, possibly there will be a day where you and i are married, then i will more than happily take your opinions into consideration, but until that day, MY money is MINE, and i will do with it as i please. if you can't accept that, then we need to reevaluate our relationship"
mind you, this is in front of a crowd of people which i didn't notice, and i was really hoping at the time that she would just break up with me (the constant nagging, and we were only in college). unfortunately, the only thing she heard was "married", giddily hugged and kissed me, and said i can do whatever i want. it wasnt until a month ago that we FINALLY broke up (or rather she accepted the fact).
but yeah, if you want the coupe, get the coupe, theres plenty more women out there (the non-controlling types).

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
Studly,
I'll shock you and alienate all my fellow G owners in one fell swoop by saying, if I couldn't have my G coupe, and if I had the money, I'd have an S60R in my driveway. I was in one 2 days after they arrived here in Canada, and it's a sweet ride. Be sure to get the titanium with atacama interior. The construction of the car is awesome, btw- stitching in the leather is beautiful. I don't know why volvos are so inexpensive there but here north of the border, there is $15K between a G and an R.
For the unedumacated here on the forum, the R will zero to 60 better than the G, will quarter better, and while I have not seen a full test as yet in any of the mags, R&T in their "first drive" claimed that when "advanced" suspension mode is selected, the ride is the too stiff for all but the track, and the car sticks like glue. On speed channel's "test drive," they absolutely pounded the car (2 actually, one with Bobby Rahal behind the wheel!!!) and came away with nothing but praise for the car.
I was unimpressed with rear seat legroom, but neither you nor I will ever sit there. And there are some euro-isms that aren't as polished as the G, like the centre console and climate control system, but on the plus side, the thing is a rocket, it handles, has incredibly refined, hi-tech suspension (well beyond most on the road today, dare I say including the G- sorry everyone), steering and gearbox are well done, brakes are good, and it's built super tight. And the looks are timeless too, despite not being as spectacular as the G.
Our Gs are carrying 12.2 lbs for each horsepower (approx). The R carries 12 lbs per hp. In a world where smaller is better, 12.0 beats 12.2. 4 wheels are better than 2 in moving it forward.
What's not to like???
For the edification of the group I will now go take my G for a rip to apologise and make it up to her.
Cheers,
Derek

Studly,
Gonna be frank here, dude. No offense meant, but you're asking for comments / suggestions, here's mine:
1) You're not even married yet, and she's doggin' you with a collar and leash ALREADY? Time to reconsider things before alimony / child support are part of the picture. Seriously. I'm 40, and my wife KNEW better than to try to tell me what kind of car to get. I did the right thing, I asked her opinion, but her reply was, "Hey, it's YOUR car, you get what YOU want!" Now, I won't say my wife is perfect (and certainly, I'm not either), but dayum, she knows better than to give me grief about what kind of car I buy!
Once I got it, I heard her saying to a friend that she figured my mid-life crisis would either be solved by a new wife, or a new car, so she was content with the way things turned out. Give that gal a lesson now - get what YOU want, her wishes be damned - or spend the rest of your life a miserable wretch being led around on a leash.
2) If you get the Volvo, I'd suggest a chance of message board handle. "Studs" don't drive Volvos. "Duds" drive Volvos. And "Duds" pay a lot more for those Volvos that perform about the same as the G35, and look... well hell, man, it's a VOLVO!! It's not a head-turner like the G Coupe.
Finally, I'm not going to say that a Volvo is a bad car - it isn't. They serve a purpose, they do a job. But the G is more than that - it does what the Volvo will do, plus it fulfills a desire, it satisfies a passion a Volvo could never hope to. "Willing to concede" my behind... tell her that you want the G, and that's what you're gonna get, whether she likes it or not - and if she doesn't like it, don't let the door hit her on the way out - she might scratch it.

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
Because the STI is ugly compared to the G. They are trying to fix their mistake when they release the wrx, but it's still too ugly. Fast though, and i kinda wanted one for the perfomace. And i respect it as a car and anyone who has it. But, ugly!

Conqui,
The handle "StudlyMobile" came when i was sitting with my son who i (privately) call Studly. Because he is such a stud.
so, needing to create a handle...ergo, studlymobile.
whether married yet isnt' the issue. we will be married and we seek and value the others opinions.
as i read these posts, i can probably segregate them by age. they youngens out there are saying, get rid of the leash, it's your money, etc...
the more mature of us are saying, comprimise, think things out, etc.....
yes, it's a great car. the volvo is too. i think she might yield.
let me give an example. if you were on a boat, and wanted to turn another boat around, you could shimmy up along side and try to push the other boat where you want it. or, you could convince the other captain to steer it where you want it.
would seems easier?

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
The best compromise is this:
Get what you want now.
When it comes time to replace the minivan, let her choose any car she wants.
Again, I doubt you are going to get any substantial number of the true g lovers on this forum to agree with the decision, especially when a g35 sedan exists. Like a previous poster said, the Volvo by far is not a bad car, but is not in the same league as the G in terms of what most forum members look for in a car. Namely, a combination of style, performance, and reliability. Though the first characteristic is subjective, most would agree that the coupe had the S60R beat on style and reliability.

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
Lets look at it this way.....
plainly and simply.
If you were to get in a arguement with your lady ... and you wanna go for a cruise to get "away" for abit ....
if you go outside and get in the Volvo .... your gonna feel wayyyyyyy worse and she's gonna feel wayyyyyyyy better.
if you go get in the G .... and lay a wicked patch when you launch off ...
Your gonna feel like the man you are!!
and she's gonna find her place ...standing by the window ... watching her "man" drive off in a "chick magnet" ride.
Think very carefully about what I am saying....
because in the end ...
do you really think she will mind that much if you get the G and you guys are still happy together...???
for sure not
lets say one day ..you guys are NOT so happy together ..
are you gonna wish you had the G???
YOU KNOW YOU WILL ...!!!!
because everyday (IF YOU BREAK) your gonna get in that frickin Volvo and be reminded of her GRIP on you ...
and your gonna choke with every gear drivin to work.
OR
Get in the G and be reminded of doing things for YOU in your life ..
cause your a man.
PERIOD
and ohhh yahhh
make sure it's Bad A$$ BLACK...

DallyCurtis, good words my man..... i think they call this being "pu$$y whipped"

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
Ya'll are baggin' on the Volvo a bit. They've shed the boxy image, and now they're trying to inject some performance into their cars, and I think they're going to succeed. Of course, if you want a coupe, you want a coupe. But if you're seriously considering the G35 Sedan, at least go test-drive the Volvo. Shoot, the Cadillac CTS is getting a bigger engine for '04 as well (not even the V8 yet.. just a bigger V6.)
Families are about compromise. If you need room for kids and can't afford a daily driver and a weekend car, you look at cars that are practical and fun. The G35 Sedan definately fits that bill, and several of the other sports sedan contenders are catching up fast.
But first, you need to decide if you're getting a coupe or a sedan.

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
i have DG 6mt 04 coupe on order. she was there when we came back for 2nd test drive. i tested on my own the first time.
but, like many women, she didn't say "no, don't get it......." she just dropped subtle hints ("i prefer bigger cars, i am kinda claustrophobic"). and like the typical guy that i am, i just thought it might not be her preference, but she has no real issues with it.
profile, the volvo compares to a bmw 3 series. but it costs 20-25% more than the G

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
A lot of replies to this post.
I owned a 99 Volvo C70 before my G35 coupe. It was the hottest Volvo before the R came out. It was also one of the least reliable cars I've ever owned. The car was in the shop approx 2 months out of every year. It never had engine work done on it. It was in for suspension work 3 times, complete overhaul of the power steering system, rear window leaked in car washes (in 4 times for that and never fixed), large amount of wind noise at drivers window, various electrical fixes, and other fixes.
I was and still am very disappointed in my Volvo. I liked the car but come on.

Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
You are not alone on reliability issues with the Volvo. According to the latest J.D. Power and Associates Dependability study (2003), Volvo ranks below average among all vehicle manufacturers with 330 problems per 100 vehicles (average is 273). Meanwhile, Infiniti is right behind Lexus in the number 2 position with 174 problems per 100...nearly half of that of Vovlo.
Re: G35 6mt vs. S60 R - help
man..what a crock of [censored]!!
ask her dont ask us!
I've been married for 6 years. Sure i take my wife's opinion into account - but she would never tell me what i could/couldnt do - nor would i do do that to her.
Behaviour like that builds resentment, which leads to angst and ultimately deceit.
If I were you...I'd tell this fiencee right away - "come correct".
If not, you're marrying somebody who is goning to dictate your LIFE (again)...then you'll find yourself at the sorry realization that its just cheaper to keep her and you'll be sorry.
Anyhow, not to pry...but why are marrying a woman with THREE kids (one grown) especially when she's trying to run your life?
Dude - thats strict GF material right there. If yo're gonna get remarried...gotta go age -10yrs at least (j/k).
So yeah back on topic...4 door Front wheel drive VOLVO...vs a G....? WHat are you on?
