ordered an 04 6mt due in either early sept or late august. fiancee is not happy with G. thinks of it as "chick magnet" car and too small and claustraphobic (sp?).

for the sake of peace, went to volvo dealer, tested a s60 turbo (not R). priced it out. the R would be about 4k more than s60 turbo.

she seems willing to concede with R, even though it is fast car. i guess the volvo name and four doors helped sway her.

the R will cost about 5k more than G.
yes, the G has KILLER looks, but the R isn't too bad, and has much to offer.

i'm 41. she has 3 kids, though one is off to college, i have two. she also has mini van for the family type outings.

ps. since i ordered it, i've been counting the days.
this is the only car that has even rivaled the G in excitement for me. ok, maybe and M3, but that's not happening.

I think you would get more positive comments on the Volvo forum.

Car is image for many people, and many people don't view Volvo in the same way as BMW, Infiniti, Lexus performance vehicles. With that said, if you feel the s60 R fits your image, then it is the right car for you. It is also useful if you want to have a "stealth" performance car.

Pragmatic-wise, if you have a mini-van, I don't see why you can't have a 2-door. To be honest, you still seem to really want the G, and you are trying your best to rationalize the S60. The only advice I can impart is to get what you want...but I can't agree with the choice to pay almost $5k more for a car with very similar performance, and with the G35 having the Volvo beat in the looks and reliability department.

Just my 2 cents.

The only car you should EVER reconsidering over the G35 would be the 2003 Imprezza WRX STI by Subaru... That car will OWN ALL hands DOWN... Just make sure you buy a new exhaust and add a Hyper Ground wiring system in those WRX's... that's a must...

It's really your preferences at the end of the day. The S60R may be better suited for practicality. It has loads of torque at very low RPM, so you get that low-end boost that is nice for daily driving. And then you have the sedan which will be nice for kids and AWD which is great if you live in a cold-weather state.

But then again, you already have a practical hauler in the minivan so the G can be your toy car. I would imagine the G would be more fun to drive - reviews complain about the S60R's driving experience listing the raspy engine as one reason. The G probably is a lot more fun in the twisties and would get you a lot more looks than a volvo would. Also consider that the 5k extra in a volvo could buy you a lot more performance aftermarket in the G if you are so inclined.

Tough call, but it's all about your priorities.

 

Well, since you're posting this on the Coupe forum, I'm assuming the 6MT you are referring to is a Coupe, not a Sedan. That being the case, why don't you compromise a bit, and go with the G35 Sedan 6MT instead of the Volvo S60R?

Compared to the Coupe, it'll give you a much more usable back seat for the kids, a bigger trunk, and is slightly less of a 'chick magnet' than the Coupe, while providing most of the performance, handling, and bang for the buck that you originally wanted in the Coupe.

Definitely have to agree with the previous post - Even though the S60-R is a wonderful car (the best ever made by Volvo - performance wise at least) the excitement factor is not there - I would tell her that compromise is the biggest factor in determining whether or not a marriage will work, and in this case, the perfect compromise is a 6mt SEDAN! Besides, if you are ever interested in upgrading your vehicle performance-wise, you will hardly ever find anything for a Volvo (for christsakes, it's a VOLVO!) Also, even though the S60 R is all-wheel-drive, it's still front-wheel biased, whereas the G of course is a rear-wheel driven beast - stick with your guns, though, and show her who's boss (or at least attempt to!)

 

I've seen the new Volvo S60R up close and it looks really nice especially the interior with the blue faced gauges, they look like Rolex dials.

Plus since it’s turbocharged you can easily squeeze out 30-50 HP by upgrading the ECU with out your significant other knowing anything about it.

Also it’s a V O L V O, cops won’t constantly target you for a ticket like some other high performance cars.[img]/w3timages/icons/wink.gif[/img]

 

ok, she also mentioned why not get the sedan as the comprimise.
to me, the coupe's styling blows the sedan away. sedan is ok if it has spoiler in back.

is cheaper.
i am not a big image guy. last few cars were commuter cars (miles per gal were deciding factor).

orig debated another mileage car, then decided for more oomph, went from 13k to 20k onwards and upwards.

have to check out sedan options.
since i'll want certain things, that'll mean an aug order, november delivery, ugh.

i know it's my decision, but comprimise......

My fiancee went with me to test drive several cars. IS300, CLtypeS, TLtypeS, and even the Volvo S60 (turbo). Out of all the cars, the S60 made me feel old. When test driving the car, up the off ramp from the freeway.....seen my reflection off a black suv.....immediately I thought....."this is not me." I even told the salesman.

 

first and foremost, my deposit is "non refundable" due to the fact it is 6mtC with sunroof but not premium, nav or aero. not sure if the dealer would be able to sell or not (i think yes). so if no refund, i keep car.

the volvo s60r kinda looks like bmw 3 series. nice, classy, but not G35C.

 

The S60R isn't a bad choice. It won't be as much fun for you as the G even with the slightly extra juice though. It's heavier, and the AWD system is supposedly frontdrive-biased. It also isn't remotely the looker that the G is (as your gf has duly noticed).

I mean, I can't think of anything I'd advise over the S60R in that price range with your priorities (other than my G). It's a good car. And every morning when you walk out to your driveway and look at it, you'll say to yourself, "I bought a good car."

But whenever I walk out and look at my car, I'm thinking: "god DAMN you're smokin', let's ride!"

Man that would be the only car I'd get other then my G35...

Over here if you got a WRX STI you are consided eL Big DAWG in the neighborhood...

I feel like your g/f cuz now my a$$ is telling you what car you should get... GO FOR THE WRX STI (If the G35 Coupe thingy don't work out) !!!!!!

Uh, the STi is a great car and all, but it's not the same type of car as a G35 or S60R. The STi is a street legal race car, not a sports-luxury car. It's even LESS luxurious than a normal Subaru, because they yanked out a bunch of basic comforts for performance reasons. I mean, a radio is optional on that thing. That doesn't sound like it fits what he's looking for.
