RIMS/TIRES "05" 6MT
RIMS & TIRES - This thread is long but detailed and may have good info for some of you. Also, I have a great story about Infiniti Corporate in California (my wife worked there during year 1 and 2 of USA introduction) that centers around the evolution of the wheels now on Infiniti cars (remember how much they sucked in 1991.
Question - I just (July) purchased an "05" 6MT Black G35 Coupe (loaded). I am in the process of putting 20" SSR-GT-3's (Tire Rack) rims all the way around. I am having difficulty getting the setup I want and would love some input from you guys. (Note - See below for my troubles running similiar 19" wheels on an 03 sedan).
First - The Tire Rack advertises that 20" SSR GT-3's will fit my coupe, 10.5-20's-275/30/20 Rear and 9-20's-245/30/20 front. Great, however, the only tire they stock/recommend is a Continental that looks more like a snow tire than a performance tire. In researching other tires I cannot find a front tire to match this setup (Rears are plentiful), except the Pirelli "P Nero-Zero" ( which is ok, but I want options). I thought of going to a 19" front rim (keeping 20's on the back) because front tire sizes are more available, however, the 19" SSR 9.0 are on back-order for 8 months, at least.
To compound the problem Pirelli has a disclaimer that some infiniti's (not sure which ones-I should find out?) running 20" rims with these tires might (emphasis on might since only a few cases have been reported) screw with the on-board tire monitor computer (not sure of the technical term) and not allow the vehicle to engage into gear under certain tire conditions.
Summary
1) I have the rear 20" SSR GT-3's sitting in my garage and want to get the remainder of my order done (front wheels and tires).
2) I want the SSR's to show off the soon to be installed Bembo's (However, I can switch if no solution can be reached)
3) What are the widest tires I can place on this coupe (i,e, 285/30/20 rear)?
History
I traded in an "03" G35 Sedan on this "05" coupe. I took the stock wheels/tires off the "03" sedan and placed 19" SSR-GT3 (Speed Star Racing-Tire Rack) and Bridgestone 03 Pole Positions (SSR 10.0x19-275/35/19 rear, & 8.5x19 -245/40/19 Front) on the sedan (These rims and tires are currently on my new coupe but are tucked under the wheel wheels so far that I want to upgrade). On the sedan I had to roll the fenders in the rear to keep the rear right tire from rubbing when hitting bumps. It did minimize the rubbing but did not entirely solve the problem. Never had problems with the left rear though.
I'll thread the Infiniti story in my next response.
Thanks
