The practice of using acetone was covered on MythBusters in 2006, and was shown to have a negative effect in the fuel economy test. Not scientific but indicative. As well, it is known to reduce engine life by adversely affecting fuel system parts. Use at your own risk.

And finally: "Have you ever put Acetone or Paint Thinner on your hands"...

Inhalation may lead to hepatotoxic effects (causing liver damage) and the effects of exposure to acetone are known to cause kidney, liver, and nerve damage, increased birth defects, and lowered reproduction ability of males.

Again, use at your own risk, use proper safety gear and read the labels carefully.

On top of that, Gasonline is a mixture of hydrocarbons, Toulene, Xylene, 1,2,4 Trimethylbenzene, Benzene, and Ethyl Benzene. While all components including acetate are stable in it own state, having a chemical as such a high flash point could create an explosion at the wrong temperature.

In other words, you're better off pissing in your tank
wait wait wait WAT? Do you know the definition of flash point?

The flash point of a flammable liquid is the lowest temperature at which it can form an ignitable mixture in air.

I get more than that easily on my daily commute about 50\50 highway and I am what some call a 'spirited driver' everyday; no put, put, putting around here.

Maybe it's the 6MT

Didnt feel like reading the whole post, but I just watched myth busters like two to three days ago and they tested all the MPG bull****, came out with: "acetone does not work" and "french fry oil for the win!"

And here's some food for thought. If there really was some simple, inexpensive additive that could raise gas mileage, don't you think the oil companies would have looked into it already? Would you buy gas at a station that could back up claims of raising your mileage by even %10? Oh right, it's part of the conspiracy. My bad.

Didnt really have much to say until i saw this post ^^....

So you think that if lets say... gas company X (which has posted billions of dollars worth of PROFIT - not revenue - profit)... comes across a new methood of giving cars today +50% mileage: you think they are gonna let consumers get near that ****? haha i laugh at you if you said yes...

remember NiCad? LMAO what did GM do? buy the patents to superior battery technology so that gas will be in higher demand...

Sure everything that happens isnt part of a conspiracy... but if you actually look... you will notice that a few things are (esp when billions of dollars are to be had)..

lol as far as acetone... lets all pitch and buy a used G lol (what is it like 10$ a member) and do all the testing we want lol....

Isn't that what detergent gasoline does already? It's all about attracting more customers and being able to charge more for a superior product. But hey, I'm not a big oil company so these are just my opinions.

Why the f*ck would you want to lower the temperature of the gas? That just means ****ty mileage and performance due to the fact that the fuel has a harder time atomizing once it passes through the injectors since the fuel is now "colder"..... yawn need i say more?

Well, first acetone doesn't cool anything in a closed system, as others have said. It only gets cooler due to evaporation, which will not happen in a sealed gas tank and fuel line but might have a slight effect during injection with air.

Now, as to lowering the temperature of the gas, that's another story. Ever heard of a "Cool Can" for drag racing? http://www.jegs.com/p/Moroso/747208/10002/-1/10291

Supposedly, cooling the fuel both makes it and the air it touches during injection a bit more dense and it helps to prevent pre-ignition by offering a slight intercooling effect for the combustion chamber.
