G35C Escort ZR3 Installation

Hey, I need a little help from anyone who has done an Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter installation. I have one on the way and can't stand the idea of having the installers drilling holes that may not be needed. If you have one or know of a good source of installation information for the G35C or 350Z I would appreciate it. The biggest question I have is how to route wire from the engine compartment through the firewall to the interior without drilling a nasty hole and where to tap for the power source.

Why all the trouble to put one of these in. Well I got my first ticket in 15 years thanks to a motorcycle cop in the bushes shooting his laser between cars at me. No the Laser detector on the Escort 8500 and my subsequent reaction time on the brakes didn't make a bit of difference. Not even sure that the ticket was legitimate since I thought I was only five over the limit based on a glance at the speedometer and was going the speed of the other cars on the road. The ZR3 laser shifter is legal in my state and if it has the potential of saving me the hassle of a speed trap and the harassment that a hot car gets Im going to give it a try.

Ill post pics and installation steps when I get it finished in a couple of weeks.

BTW I have about 400 miles on the car now and love it!

Thanks in advance!

Re: G35C Escort ZR3 Installation

I've gotten mine completed a week ago and yes your right, it wasn't a easy installation. You can run the wires in the engine compartment to the battery and continue the wires through the wheel well between the fender and the plastic cover behind the wheel. I located my control unit behind the kick panel on the passenger side. If you roll back the carpet, you'll see a plastic plug near the floor. If you remove that plug you can see the tire through the hole and fender liner. That's where I ran the wires for the front laser detectors. The back trunk area also has a plastic plug that I was able to run the wire through for the back detector. Once in the trunk, I was able to run the wire along the floor trim panel to the passenger side kick panel.

It may have not been a perfect or professional install on my behalf but I have the skinned hands to say at least I did the best I could. Now if I can only prove it works?

Thanks! I hear ya on the proof. I have the proof the the escort 8500 with laser detection alone is not enough. I would hate to have a repeat. I got a good deal of positive feedback about the ZR3's effectivness but as with the install, the proof comes down to doing it myself.

AltaLad,
Where did you mount the front laser defusers and how? I'm thinking the best place is in the lower black grills on either side of the license plate but I'm a little concerned about how to mount them.

Thanks again!

Re: G35C Escort ZR3 Installation

I wound up mounting the front detectors in the grill. A little cutting and file'ng is required but the install is clean and undetectable from casual inspection from the outside. I mounted the dectectors as level as possible and center from the headlights and Infiniti emblem. Not for the faint of heart as it was a tough decision to start hacking up the grille. But in the end it worked out.

Gone on holidays for the next two weeks. Just me, the girlfriend, the dog and a open road with Sirius to Vancouver .... should be fun
